Default Whats this?

I don't know what it is but it sure fought like hell and was pretty damn heavy too. This thing was pissed of to be out of the water. Also are these common in ponds?

Its also called a mudcat. They have a tendency to actually destroy spinnerbaits.

They are common in very muddy, swampy, shallow, nasty water or mud. Keep your hands away from the mouth, their jaws can crush fingers.

they do fight like mad.. never caught one bass fishing.. the mouth have a razor sharp bone in it -kinda like a red drum- with enough power to bit thru clams in there jaws.. nope definatly don't stick your hand in there..

they go by a dozen names but one thing is clear they are from an era of the dinsours a very anceint species of fish..

Tis a very nice specimen of a bow fin/mud fish. Is that your fist?

My first was the same class my second was a little smaller 8-9 class. I caught mine a jerk bait. btw, if you thought fl had big bass, it has HUGE bow fin. I saw an old pic of my dad with one in the 15lb class range, I still fish at the same spot he caught it at, never caught on that big though..... I keep hopping to get lucky with a spinner bait. But most the time I'm bass fishing/tarpon fishing when I go their. Just though I'd brag!

His was a little small then this one:

He didn't destroy it, but he mangled it pretty well. Wish i'd of known what it was, I wouldn't have released him back into the pond.

Grinnel, shoepick, Cyprus bass, bowfin. I hooked one night on the river and all I could see was him coming out of the water. I thought I had the 10lber too. The first one I ever caught, I got slapped in the head with a rod when I went to grab him out of the water. My grandpa popped me and told me not to be sticking my hand off in there. Granpa always had a way of getting his point across.

with joy in my heart i can state that i have never caught a bow fin. never even hooked one for that matter. but it is a nice looking fish, looks very much like a trout. maybe they aren't in my bodies of water?
