Or I guess that is what you call it. Are all reel feet standard in measurment? I am asking this because I plan on building a rod with a minima reel seat and the guys uses Pflueger President reels (BB144- you're gonna dig this one!). I am trying to minimize the thread on the seat because I am trying to shave every aspect of weight I can.

And if someone has a President, would you mind measuring the length and width and send it to me? If worst comes to worse, I will whittle a popsicle stick and fit it or try to find one in a store around the house.

I might point out that reel weight is used as a balance point,and makes more weight useable sometimes than less without it to balance the rod,depending upon rod weight and where its all located.

All of my Presidents are locked up in my rod locker at home but I just sent one to DVT Mike, maybe he can get the measurements off of it for you.

Aware of that Mule about the weight. I will use one of my Curados to balance it out though. Curado comes in at 7.4 and the Pfluegy at 8.0, so there should be that much discretion there. I could tape a weight to the spool to get it exact though. I just don't want to build off of a Curado reel foot if it is longer or shorter and go DOH!!!! Along with other choice words. I don't think it will matter and I might be overthinking. I know DVT is a very experienced rod builder and might chime in for me. And Pancake & JRob have put a few on too.

Yeah bet they can chime in with more accurate data more related to how that effects it.
Oddly orvis made a 1 oz fly rod that was a dream to hold,also cost a fortune.
My bass reels being the cheapies weigh 7,8 oz or 9 at times,but do ok,on a two handed rod unnoticeable on single handles I like them to feel like a fencing foil.

I don't think the reel feet are much different on those two models but I have a couple Pfluegers on my reel bench for tuning. I'll measure one and post it later. I always trim the threads on reel seats and leave 1-2 threads for some flexibility. The hardest part of the split seat is making sure the sections stay where you want them. I'm with you in building the lightest rod you can. Only in vary rare circumstances will I add weight unless the customer requests it.

If he's using a President casting - and you're trying to build as light a rod as possible - suggest he order a Patriarch XT specifically for this rod. That will save you almost 1.5 ounces over a President, and it's a much better reel having both the centrifical and magnetic brake systems. If he wants a very light rod why match it with a "heavy" reel? I love my Pflueger reels and it's what I'd do.

For what he is paying for the rod components, and what I am thinking it is going to come out to, he should pair it with the MGX. It would definitely be aesthetically correct hahahahaha. Looks and weight wise.

I do know that I used a Castway super exposed seat for my topwater rod. The Okuma is very tight in the seat and the Curado is pretty easy to install.

The best way I've found to do the Minima seats is to use the foam arbors. Cut your threads down and glue the arbor into the threaded section. That way you can slide it on the blank and it will be easier to hold it's place while you tighten the reel down. This will allow you to get your placement with the reel on the rod. I cut my Minima threads as short as possible, they look better and weigh less.

The Pflueger and Curado reel feet are the same - 62mm. Another trick I've used is cutting the foot off a junk reel and using it as type of jigto hold everything in alignment. Of course it still is best if to have the actual reel available during the build but that's not always posssible.
