Default Different oils for different reels

You know there are some many different oils and grease and when people ask what is the best lube for your reel don’t you have to take into consideration how they use their reel. I When I was working on reels I would always ask the angler how they fish and how much attention are they willing to pay to their reel. Me I love a slick reel and being able to heave that crank bait! But I always had a little bottle of out Xtreme reel+ and had no problem reaching for a bottle. I also put a four digit number on the bottom foot and don’t have a problem checking when the last time I oiled and what oil was used (a little nerdy I know) I also am a fanatic about cleaning and flushing my bearings and do this more probably than most……But every angler is different. As much as I love Oust and Xtreme oil if the angler doesn’t want to oil his reels more frequently than if using brand A you have to take that into consideration. This is also why I stress labeling your reels because if you don’t pick up all your reels every time you’re on the water than maybe you just use the super slick oil on your reels you most commonly use. What do you guys think?

I usually have a guy at a local tackle shop detail my reels, but I remember he once told me he uses an oil designed for firearms? Does that make sense? I guess so..I trust him and my stuff works good. I have tried Hot Sauce(not Tabasco) and that seemed OK.

More important than brand is to use lubes in an appropriate application for that lube and to apply it to clean parts. You can also use oils of different viscosities to fine tune spool speed. In general a lower vicosity oil will allow more free spool but will not last as long. I'm currently using Boca's Bearing Soak treatment followed by a light high speed oil. This seems to improve performance while not requiring constant re-oiling. In other cases I lube a freshly flushed bearing with Yellow Rocket fuel. A needle oiler helps keep you from over oiling bearings. I like Super Lube synthetic grease for gears and Reel-x for sliding parts such as the clutch. A few drops of gear oil on the worm gear is a good compromise between light oil and grease.

The most important thing to remember is to not slap new lube on dirty parts and to avoid mixing brands since there is a slight chance of incompatability.

According to claims, bathing clean, dry bearings in this product lets it bond and seal microscopic pits and pores in the roller balls. Having worked in the oil industry I'm skeptical of claims of one material bonding to another without heat/ high pressure etc. but in my early trials it seems to be working.

No, the UDL is a tungsten disulfied treatment that costs $15/bearing. This needs to be applied using pressure. The only reel application where a dry lube might be an advantage would be on the levelwind so dirt won't stick and collect there. Even at that any reasonable maitenance routine is probably sufficient.

Mike... You mention using a needle oiler, I've been looking for a couple. Can you direct me to a site where I can buy them? Thanks

same general idea, a little cheaper: http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_...rce=google_ext . R/C and music instrument supply places are likely to have them.

I've been using Yellow Rocket Fuel, Rem Oil and Berkley's reel oil interchangeably for several years with no apparent difference to me. For the average "bank beating" fisherman's purpose does anyone want to weigh in on any of these three oils?

Thanks for the chart. Rem Oil has left the building. I'm wondering how many anglers use 3-in-1 oil in bearings... might be a pretty good choice?

I have its good, keep one thing in mind temperature, the higher the viscosity the thicker, and stiffer when ice is on the line,my opinion is all.
So all more or less have an application where applied would be usefull.
Petroleum jelly would not work at all in the arctic, yet the rem might.
Ive used penn oil and browning a lot simply because it came with a new reel, and wd 40 is use full more in flushing than lubing, but use full none the less,if not for its water displacement properties alone.

Saltwater guys down here in FL have told me that hot sauce crystallizes after a while , I'm not taking that chance.
Personally I use Shimano or Daiwa oil for bearings (after there flushed of coarse). And I use pennzoil marine grease on gears.

Many of the surf/casting competitors use 3 -1 oil on there conventional reels.(spool bearings)

the record is 859 ft

this is how its done.

There is a web site called alantani.com take a look around there and see what he says about lubricants for reels.
