Situation question...
I have a good friend I have known a few years. He is in construction like I am so times are not the best for him much like it has been for me. I never realized he liked to fish until we were having dinner the other night. A couple of years ago he seperated from his wife and left town for a while. They later divorced. Somewhere along the way she sold or gave all of his fishing gear. I was thinking about giving him a couple of my baitcasting rigs. I have 12 and several of them I rarely use. They are not new but in good condition. What would you do? Do you think it would insult him?

Just tell him you got some extra baitcasters lying around that you don't use to often, and ask him if he wants one! I doubt he'd be offended.

You could offer to take him and lend him a set up or two. Just tell him to hold on to them in case he wants to go and you can't make it. Tell him he can borrow them until he gets his own. Then just forget to ask for them back.

I agree with Bob, this is probably the easiest way to do it.

I agree. That makes life easy, and you can razz him about taking good care of them lol

I agree with Bob as well. No cause for him to be offended...and you might get your gear back!
That's a nice thing you're thinkin about by the way. Good for you!

I would definitely get him to go with you before you give him any gear. Try to make sure he's likely to use it before you just give it to him.

I gave him the two baitcasters tonight. Matching pair of Diawa reels & Bass Pro Shop Extreme rods. 6 foot & 6.5 Foot rods. He was surprised. Made me feel good to give him those.

Neither of us have a boat which we can put on a big body of water and my only fishing hole belongs to a relative who only lets me fish alone. I am going to try to find us some small water.

Just tell him you are not using them and he is welcome to use them. I've done the same thing for people in the past and it has been greatly appreciated. It is a good thing you are doing.
I doubt he will be insulted-just a friend helping a friend. Like Coldbasser said, "what are friends for"?

Hopefully the gift you gave him will be paid forward to someone else down on their luck. Good move Fred and commended for it.

AUFred, I also enjoy small lake fishing. Maybe I can help you out a little with finding a place to fish.
Here is a list of small Alabama public fishing lakes: http://www.outdooralabama.com/fishin...r/where/lakes/ Also, here : http://donavanlakes.org/ Donovan lakes is a private fishing club in Marion, Alabama, not too terribly far from Prattville. I have been a member for about 5 years now. It has 9 (actually 8 this year, one went dry and they haven't decided if the will refill/restock it or not) lakes ranging from over 100 acres to about 10 acres or so. All of them are very well maintained, have good facilities and have outstanding populations of big bass and bluegill. They can all be fished effectively from small boats or the bank. Once you join you have access 24/7 365 for your family and a guest. It does cost $800 a year, so it could be too expensive, but I have found it to be VERY cheap given what you get. They are rarely crowded, in fact in 5 years of regular fishing I've only shared a lake with another boat twice, and more often I don't even see another fisherman. |
