Need some help picking baits for a pond
Ok i have some money to spend and i figured i needed some new baits for the ponds i fish. Here are the conditions...
1.Pond one-maybe an acre in size. I've seen huge fish jump out of there. This pond has just about everything in it. Gets to about 8 feet deep in one part. The pond is full of weeds. Maybe 3 feet of water doesn't have weeds. There is a fallen tree in one part....kind of hard to get to so i wade near it. There are tons of bluegill/pumpkinseed in there and apparently there are perch. Pike and bass it what i want to catch. The edges of the pond have patches of weeds but most of the edges are clear. 2. The second pond is 2-3 times bigger than the other pond, with a couple rocky banks with a big pipe coming out of it. 2 islands in the middle and probably a little deeper than the first pond. I dont think there are pike in this one. We have seen a bass eat a small bird in this pond before so they get big! 3. This pond is HUGE the thing is, it's a ton of small pockets linked through cattails. Huge fish are in here. I dont think this pond has bluegill. a pike coughed up a shad when we caught it so im guessing that's the forage there. There are less weeds and it's more shallow. It's shallow enough that the fish make boils in the water when they move. what kind of baits should i use in here along with techniques on fishing them? Thanks! |

well it sounds like you should stick to plastics... as for the pike and bass i like a 1/2 to 3/4 oz. spinnerbait with big blades in waters like those... also a topwater would be good!

ya i dont think spinnerbaits work in there....inline spinners do but no one seems to catch anything on spinnerbaits. What are some good topwaters? I have a couple rapala skitterwalks, a hulapopper and a sammy to use along with scum frogs

weedless plastices sounds good to me. i also fish a farm pond the is about on acre with thick weeds where u can only fish like 3ft of it. i really dont think those ponds are worth it.

I would use Senko or Flukes in pond 1. Use jig-n-pig in pond 2. and through a 10" worm in pond 3.

in the first pond try using buzz frogs over the weeds and may want to try a tiki stick

I have a mild suspicion about what ponds you're talking about and, if I'm right, I thought access was a problem. At least it looked that way the one time I was there just scouting the place. But we could be miles apart.

I would get a variety of different soft plastic baits. Also try topwater frogs and jigs matched to the forage in these ponds

I would suggest that perhaps you should reconsider spinner baits. Only here is the thing. I've had tremendous success with them in ponds, but NEVER on anything larger than 1/4 oz. In ponds, lighter and smaller seems to be the rule with tandom spinners. And stick with white with nickle or gold blades. I prefer the gold blades myself.

I suggest you pick up a couple of the strike king rocket shads...its about he size of a crappie spinnerbait but they weigh about 1/2 oz and cast really well.....you can probe the contors offshore with these bad boys and get them down to the fish....also they are pretty weedless...
