Big ol' worm fishin'?
Any advise on fishing a Zoom Magnum/Ol' Monster-type worm? Gonna be at Smith Mountain Lake in VA. on March 8th. I've got the rod/reel covered, but interested in ya'll's experiences as far as weight, color, hook, etc.
Thanks, P2 |

I love these worms, well maybe not the mag11 but the ol monster is a favorite especially in watermellon seed. I usually t-rig them with a 2/0 tru-turn. I throw them out and usually I get lit up on the drop, but a subtle twitch retrieve works good as well. Work them slooooow IMHO.

A 10" worm will catch alot of aggressive bass of all sizes and even rock bass will take them. There are days they work magically and then there are days you are wasting your time fishing them.I like Berkley the best and then Culprit. Black or motor oil are my favorite colors and after that anything translucent and will blend in with the bottom fairly well.I use 16 lb test fluorocarbon with a 3/16 florida screw in type tungstun weight and a Owner 5/0 monster worm hook. I always have one rigged up because I pitch the 10 " worm back through where I caught bass fishing a jig. Ivan

Anybody tried the Gulp Turtle back worms? I watched them fishing them on TV a couple weeks ago, they looked pretty nice.

I like them for Shakey Heads and Drop Shots. Slice 'em in two for the DS though.

Thanks for ya'll's input on the monster worms. I'm gonna try and get a few practise days in just to get the feel of fishing them. Also, Bassn- I've used turtlebacks for several years. The funny thing is that, more than any other bait by far, I always manage to catch more d*** catfish on them during tournaments than bass. It's probably just coincidence. They have a lot of tail action and tend to twist the line, but they do attract Mr. Bucketmouth.
Thanks again! P2 |

I use the Zoom O'Monster a lot in the summer at night and have done well. They have not been good for me during the daylight. The lake I fish is very clear so it may just be to big during the day there. I rig it with a 3/8 oz weight and a 4 or 5 hook. You might be surpirised how small a fish will hit it. I have caught 14 inchers on it. I like the black grape color and the Red Shad at night.Berkley also makes a Power Worm that size that has been real good to me. Fish2win

The show I watched was using 10" Turtle backs on a C-Rig. They were doing pretty well too.

I wouldn't fish a Red shad Mag., 3/16th oz, 3/0 around the SM Yacht club pilings in 20+ ft of water. I started to count it down and it stopped dropping at 5. Thinking that big baits catch big fish I reeled down and hit the fish hard. It flew up and over the boat , being only 6" long. Little $%#@$% .
Sorry, can't help you with the Ol' Monster but I can with the Swamp Crawler!!! |

Love the Swamp Crawlers. Especially the old, but respectable, Midnight Chartruese.

I can't speak for smith mt. yet but the 10'' culprit in june bug has been awesome at briery creek. two different bodies of water but it would definitely be worth a shot. there's something about the culprit junebug color that the fish seem to like at briery. they wouldn't touch zoom's j-bug, but ate the culprits up!!

Well, to be honest, I haven't fished the magnum worms in several years now. I think I will work that back into my arsenal for some of the lakes I will be fishing this year. I can't really provide a good answer for not using them. I used to have about every color 10" Berkely Power Worm made! (still have a lot of them stored in a special sealed container in my shop!)

Thanks much for all the help, guys. There's another thread that talks about fishing strengths and learning new techniques/baits. I've decided that this year is the year I'm gonna expand my approach a lot. All ya's help has been great and very much appreciated. Hey 3D- I know that fish you described... I've caught him and a good number of his runt buddies at Smith Mountain, too.

If you want to have alot of fun MyMomIsBecky(a forum member) used to make a 15 inch curly tail worm that I used to catch pigs out of a farm pond near me. It was so big I had to attach 2 hooks but it worked pretty well and produced a 5lber for me. But yeah t-rig worked best for me nice and slow.

I've had some real good luck with a 10" Strike King Iguana. It's a 10" Lizard. I've caught some really nice fish on them as well as a few smaller bass. I t-rig it with a 3/16 or 5/16 weight. It's one of the 3X baits and will float without a weight. I will definately be throwing one this Spring!!!

Netbait puts out an 11" worm that I use at night. These worms are a little thinner than others but for me they are worth it. I use Red Shad.

Hey, Zook, do you ever use the Gulp! Tequila Sunrise worms? My buddy bought some and I told him that you liked the color. Just wonderin' if you ever used that brand in that color.

BassAddict, you mentioned the 3X bait. I've used the Strike King 3X trailers and love 'em. Also used the Arkansas Shiner Fluke-lookin' thing with limited success. Just curious if you've thrown any other 3X baits and what your opinion might be-- Actually, I'd be curious about anybody's opinion on this stuff.
Thanks, -Pig |

I mostly use Zoom, Berkley, and Yum soft plastics but the 3x stuff is good too especially the Iguana.
