Cold front moving in, air temps around 50.
Fished the famous (locally anyway) hot pond on Erie. It is supposed to be a lot better when the main lake gets colder, but we went there now anyway. It is a warm water discharge area in a bay off Lake Erie with water temperature of 73 and 42 on the main lake. We pulled in and were greeted with a thousand sea gulls flying around and shad busting everywhere. On my second cast I hooked something big with a trap.
After a few minutes of fighting it turns out I foul hooked an 8 pound carp in the tail. We rounded the first bend and started getting into some bass. For the most part they liked shaky head worms, but I got one on a jerkbait and another on a crankbait. We moved around the shore and i hooked into another good fish on a crankbait. Finally got it up to the boat and it was a sheephead.
We worked our way back out to the mouth and I got another fish on a trap, it was one of the shad. I've never seen shad this big before, I bet this one was 10-12" long (see pics). The rains started after we had been there for about 5 hours and we heard thunder so we headed home.
At the end of the day I had around 20 bass and my partner had over 30. He's a local guide and on our Pro Staff, Jose Garza. He's headed to Florida to guide this winter on Toho and Kissimmee - www.josegarzafishing.com
(that's a 1/2 oz. trap)
