IMHO, the smallmouth pound for pound fights harder than a largemouth of similar size.

A smallmouth hardly ever gives up, they dive harder, jump more, get OFF easier , pound for pound.
Esp if you get one in a river current compared to a lake. Around here getting a small mouth means top water in the fall....usually there are more largemouth in ohio lakes than smallmouths, if you really want to experience the smallmouth action, take pearl white tubes to Lake Erie and its sister lake just north, Â*Lake St. Clair,in Michigan.. Or plan a trip to Canada, rice lake, any of them have lots of walleye, huge rock bass, and smallies... craws on rocks and tubes are where its at, and perhaps some spinnerbait |

Smallmouths definately. As JB said they never give up. I've seen them jump clear out of the boat after they have already been landed. Smallmouths don't generally grow as big as largemouth but they definately fight harder and make spectacular jumps.

I think, pound for pound, a 3 ton Smallie would fight harder then a 3 ton shark. Whatever the case, I've never caught anything that can outfight a decent sized small mouth.

Man, if you get a chance to fish for smallies, do it. IMO I think a 3lb smallie would outfight a 6lb largemouth

I doubt it. I've caught both and it just doesn't seem like that to me. |

What a bout peacock bass? you think they give a good fight. From watching some of the fishing shows, they look like they give one hell of a fight! Any one on the board ever try fishing them? If so lets hear some of the adventures.

no, never tried fishing them...but i have seen people fishing them in person(not on t.v.) they have the smaller breed down in s. florida...and i think one will definitly outfight a LM, i have never fished a smallie so i dont know if it will ,out fight a smallie...now the s. american will outfight a smallie and LM hands down...

never caught a smallie, never did enough fishing up north, but from what I've seen on tv, largemouth are nothing compared to a small. Pound for pound, a small will continue to get away the entire time, lm give up sooner.

So we have decided that smallies fight harder. Can anyone say why? My guess is that they mostly fight current more than largemouth.

not sure why, might be they are more compact, might be there demeanor, i read an article in bassmasters where they crossed a smallie and a largemouth and called it a mean mouth, this fish would attack ppl and dogs who swam in the pond, now I love to catch one of those
