B.A.S.S Tourney boats
I know for the Classic that competitors were required to fish out of the Tritons. During a normal event do they have the choice to fish with the "Official" boat or their own? Many times I see them wearing a ProCraft, Ranger, Skeeter sponsored shirt but they are fishing out of a Triton.

I know this wasn't the case with the open this weekend at Kissimmee. And also McWilliams was fishing out of a Ranger at the Classic from what I saw on film.
Triton has a deal with BASS that they are basically the "official" boat of BASS, and that's what the winners are given (a Triton).

I know in the FLW BFL tournaments, Ranger provides an extra incentive to fish out of a ranger boat. I think it's something like an additional $6,000 if you win the tournament out of a Ranger boat. But they don't require you to fish from a specific boat. I'm not sure if that's the same with the Stren series or FLW Tour and Series.

I believe it's only for the Classic that they have this requirement. Do you remember Ike's tirade and flag snafu. He claimed it was due to the boat's aerator not working properly, and if he had his boat it would of never happened.

I have researched this a little and I think you are right Lizard. Everybody in the Classic had to fish from a Triton tourney boat and McWilliams was in one also. He had a Ranger shirt on but the boat was a Triton. I had to go back and look at my recording to make sure.
Again this year Ike complained about the Tritons. I kind of understand where he is coming from since he wants to get that new BassCat wet. |

I honestly understand where some of them are coming from. Granted, most of us would have no problem fishing from a $55 Triton but it still wouldn't be the same as fishing from your own rig. The boats handle different, the controls are in a different location and they are going against their sponsors.

So if Ford sponsors a Nascar race all the drivers should drive Fords?

Not the same thing!
If Nike sponsors basketball, Callaway sponsors golf etc... However, I think every sport survives on different revenue streams and deals with sponsors in a different way. I would imagine NASCAR could find a major sponsor for anything they do and has a little more leverage with sponsors and their demands... Where BASS may have to be a little more accomodating to a major sponsor... Just my two cents!

I don't make the rules, but the money talks doesn't it. There are lot's of things that are controlled by the sponsers in any sporting event whether you know it or not. Many college basketball teams have sponsorships from shoe companies, so either they where those shoes or don't play. Fair or not it the rules. So if anyone decides to fish in this tourney, then they agree to the "RULES". If they want to have they're own tourney without these rules, then start one, get sponsors and have it. We could discuss this topic forever and nobody would be right or wrong about "HOW IT SHOULD BE". I'm here to tell ya that there are lot's of rules sponsor's insist upon and get. Why is a Ranger Boat, and a Evinrude Motor along with Garmin electronics the only way to get paid out bonuses for fishing in any BFL, or FLW event? Because of who they are sponsored by. So if you want their bonus, fish from one of there boats, and use that equipment, otherwise no bonus period.

Lets not forget that B.A.S.S is owned by Disney (correct me if I am mistaken) and I don't think they are hurting for cash. In any other sport, golf is sponsored by Titlesist but the golfers can play any clubs and ball they choose. The White Sox are sponsored by Adidas but the players can wear any brand spike they choose and so on. In shooting competition it might be the Glock nationals but many shooters are using a different gun. I do realize that all sports are money driven but making the competitors who are sponsored by another manufacture use the "sponsors" product is wrong. I guess we will have to agree to disagree on this one. |

I always thought they used the same boat so that it would be an even event, no major advantages for anyone.

So if I got sponsored by Viagra- would I have to sport wood the entire tourney???? If I got sponsored by Tampax- well you know!!! Again, sponsorship is on different levels, some pay to run the whole thing, others pay just to have their name on a boat or a shirt, others pay to sponsor the event.

bring on the money
With nascar, there are owner points, manufacture points, etc...for the teams, and each manufacture sponsors nascar. I'm sure no one would complain if each boat manufacture gave bass several millions of dollars each year for the tourny payouts, and have owner points, and so on. I highly doubt any bass angler would complain if tourny purses would increase to millions instead of $100,000. Just my 2 sense also.

Now It Makes Sense
Thanks for the info. Now I know why Kevin VanDam was in Triton. I couldn't understand why he had all the Nitro and BPS stuff on and fishing out of a Triton. It was a cunundrum.

I can understand being frustrated not being able to have your choice of rigs when that much money is on the line. I also understand that they get to fish out of verrryy nice rigs. I have fished out of a Triton, and if I were buying a new boat, my money wouldn't go to them. Every boat has its advantages and disadvantages.
