Default PNJ and Raywill forgive me

Well I just got home with my new Flippin, and Pitchin rod. It's a 7'6" Heavy, Moderate-Fast GL2 G-Loomis. I looked all around, and they had some St Croix's and this Rod, plus a bunch of off name brand stuff, for the size I wanted. I chose this one for several reasons.

1. Retractable, so it will fit in my rod bag.
2. It was actually more flexible at the tip, than the St. Croix MH rods.
3. It has a grip and handle length that I like alot, the St Croix has just to long of a handle once you get past the 6'6" size.
4. It said Flippin stick on it ;D
5. I wasn't going to buy a $50 rod, I now know the difference and theres no comparison.
6. I truly do like the GL2's for the price you can buy them at. Not as good as the REAL G-Loomis's but a good substitute for my first one.
7. I needed to get one asap to practice, next tourney is 5/14.

So now go ahead and berate me. But while your at it, below is a list of the reels I currently have that I use. Which would be the best for this application. I'm more concerned with Pitchin, since I'm a backseater, and need to get more distance than Flippin usually. And how should I set up the breaks, and tension control. All of the below reels have 6 weight centrifugal breaking systems. Should I take them all off, or 4 off 2 on etc...

Any input form anyone is appreciated.

1. Shimano Curado B200SF 6.2:1
2. Shimano Curado B200, not SF 6.2:1
3. Pinnacle Carrera Titanium SF 6.2:1
4. Shimano Calais 100 5.8:1
5. Shimano Curado B200 5.1:1

it depends if you will be moving along at a good clip on the TM..then you would want a faster retrieve.if you beat an area to death like i do,then a slower retrieve is ok....so.........will you be fishing fast or slow?
go middle of the road calais 100, 5.8:1that way you can pretty much do fast or slow...unless you're with KVD....then you need a 12.5:1...lol

See I disagree with Tom. You want to take slack line up as fast as possible. Most baits you are gonna pitch, you work back to the boat with the rod not your reel.Go with your Curado SF.

Scott why didnt you buy the GL3 I told you I wanted to sell?

Well I don't think KVD is gonna be at this one LMAO ;D I have no idea who I will be with, it's a blind draw the night before the tourney. I truly wish I would partner with a guy who is a slow fisherman, then I could go to my strengths, finesse fishing 8)

zooker, and Hula,

Well obviously you guys haven't picked up a Shimano Calais because it's without a doubt the smoothest reel I've ever used. Anyone who has used it, including Ilbassin will tell you how SWEET it really is. Also the same words came out of Art Ferguson's mouth, and he fishes for a living. Your BPS Extreme "Can't Touch That" I assure you. By the way zooker I picked up some Cajun Red today, it's the first time I've seen it locally. I won't try it till after the tourney, but I'll let you know how I like it. I'm leaning towards the Curado SF as Ilbassin suggested, just because I would like to keep the Calais for my Cranking rod this time around.

By the way did I mention, that I have the Army Corp of Engineers original print of the Lake ;D Even shows where the fish attractors were put, the old houses, and foundations. It has like three towns that are now under water, with lots of nice structure including a Island that was put underwater when they flooded it. It pays o have nice friends.

OK back to the subject at hand, what about the braking setup? Any suggestions on that?

I didn't buy it because I didn't truly know I needed one. But obviously I was wrong. Believe me I thought I had enough rod and reels. But since we're on the subject, what length and action does it have, it always pays to have a backup I very well may take it off your hands. PM me the specifics, and what you want for it. I'm sure we can work out something

Lizard, Congrats! You've got yourself a nice rod again. Never mind my personal opinion. What I meant was you are going to have to buy another rod for flipping soon if it is not a high end model. Shimano SF is a good reel with it. I am sorry you didn't buy the mighty Castaway Bud Pruit that I don't have. Oh well it's too late now. Good luck with your new gear & catch many bass!

thin lizzy
i have had a ****mano calais i gave the dam thing to shag nasty-he in fact threw it in the lake- smooth yes but it sucks were it counts.

for the reel set up -which is very hard to do with a ****mano- first remove your mag/reel brakes -turn them to off or free postion-then set your reel tension-that being the large knob near the reel handles- you want the lure fall pretty fast from rod tip to ground. once you acheive this set your brake quite heavy as this does not impeed your distance it just controls the backlash. and trust me you WILL get a backlash.

Thin Lizzy, I am glad you are your own person and not trying to be someone else. 8) RayWill, I will be the first person to tell you that I don't know everything, and I know I am an @ss on some of the jig posts, but I don't mean to be.Flipping & pitching is my fishing except for a very small percentage otherwise. When I reply to jig, flippin & pitchin posts, I am doing that to help the people here. I would like to save them the hassel of learning the way I did and if I can help one person, then it was worth while doing and making myself look like an @ss. I am at odds with the gear ratio. It depends on your style of fishing. If you pitch alot, I say go with the faster ratio for lure retrieve speed, if you flip really heavy cover, go with a lower ratio for the winching power to pull the weight of the weeds & fish. The other major factor in flipping is the reel has to free spool the jig or bait at a normal rate of fall ,but when the jig hits the bottom, the spool must stop exactly with no overrun. The reels that work really well for me is the Team Daiwa TD-1's , Pinnacle tetra, Quantum energy PT's.Its no secret that I like the Castaway Bud Pruitt pitching stick(7'6" MH) & Flipping sticks(7'6" Heavy). In my opinion they are the best I have ever used and the bonus is they cost $104.00 a piece. I have had many flipping sticks nearly double in price, but did not perform any better than the Castaway rods do.The Falcon Lowrider 5 power series is another great flipping stick. This is my opinion after alot of reels and rods and fishing jigs exclusively for the most part. It may not be to everyone elses standard of thinking, it is what I have found that works the best so far for me.I am continuing to search for better products, Kistler Helium is my next product to buy.Any one who knows a good price on them please let me know.
