Ol catfish hit a jig while I was flipping it. He doubled my flippin rod and took drag off my reel. (20 lb test)
He didn't move much, but I feel like he was at least 50 lbs. Couldn't turn this fish, he just stayed on the bottum. Then after getting under some rocks, he just broke off. Biggest bass was this year, hit a TX rigged plastic bait, then after seeing this fish he pulled off. I was later advised that a bass of about 9 lbs was caught in this creek the week after I lost mine. Same fish ? Who knows. |

I lost a 45+ inch stripper at the boat, and I damn near lost my 13.5lb bass, when she jumped she threw my lure wich then hooked the outside of her face, when I pulled it in and and saw how she was hooked I couldn't believe I even got it in the boat!

One I lost last February-If she wasn't double digit she was real close. Came up and rolled on the surface so I got a good look at her then dove into the hydrilla accompanied by the pop of my line as it snapped. Now this never fails: Immediately before I made that cast I told myself I needed to switch to braid and this was the last cast with the mono spooled rod before I rigged up the braid rod.

Biggest bass I lost was down in Texas, we were catching a lot of nice bass one evening at the end of a long shallow point on poppers, we reeled in several in the 4 to 6 lb range in less than an hour and then I hooked the BIG one. We were making fairly long casts so I got to fight her for a good stretch, I knew she was big, but just how big we didn't know until she finally tail-walked the first time several feet from the boat. She was HUGE to this Iowa boy! I had caught several fish in previous years in the 5 to 6 lb range and this fish that jumped made them 5 lbers look like a dink. As the excitment was too much to handle at this point, I think I tried to horse her in a little too quickly at that point, got her almost next to the boat and she did one more tail-walk about 2 ft away from the edge of the boat, this time the treble hooks on the popper didn't hold, the lure came zinging across the other side of the boat and I sat down and almost cried. The guy I was fishing with at the time had many more years experience at bassing than me and he kept saying the fish was definitely close to the "teenager" mark and I believe the fish was too as she was just so much larger than any other bass I had ever previously seen. I may have to relive that moment for many, many years to come, and that is not a welcome thought, but I hope to land a bass of that size someday before I put away the rods and reels for good. I know I'm going to keep trying anyway!

Dont know, never get a good look at them when they snap off. I dont like braid anymore, It hurts my casting, I Will take nice old Trilene XT any day thank you very much. Braid is what you use to tie your boat to the dock!!!!

Different tools for different jobs, PB. My rods have a mix-braid, flouro, and mono depending on the application. Bottom line, though, is use what works for you.

I had one on one night while fishing from a dock. Had a huge shiner on letting it freeswim about 10 feet down when something grabbed it and about took my rod into the water before I grabbed it. I figured it was a catfish, but it was so big that I couldn't even turn the handle on my reel while it was fighting. I had it on an older reel so the drag wasn't working that great and didn't start peeling off. I held it for about 5 minutes trying to get my drag to let loose when it finally just turned and broke my line. I know he was big because I was using 30lb braid. I was sick for the rest of the night.

I don't know. Big, but nothing big enough to break my paying attention so I didn't do as well as I could have the remainder of the day fishing. Shake it off and continue to concentrate on the next lure presentation and catching the next fish, so it doesn't ruin the rest of the day. P N J

Well put
I have seen fellows break a rod right into and chuck it into the water after loosing just a ordinary bass... I guess the worst I ever had was in a tournament up at Grand Lake St. Marys, I was fishing in a club tournament and went back to this area called the church camp, it had small alleys of water with new homes on it, and a small pool in the back where a church was located, I picked a couple of one pounders off a point, went down the left side and stuck a nice 4 lb bass, the guy in the back went to reach for the net and tripped, hit his head on the fire extinguisher, but was ok, meanwhile back at the ranch, I saw all this happen and thought I could swing it it, [glow=red,2,300]WRONG[/glow]...the bass came off.. i yelled the F word, took a minute to reflect on getting my head straight as these two 80 year old ladies stared me down from the church lawn lmao 8) It doesn't pay to get shook up....just go back after them |

Was a Northern Pike I think, was in MN in a canoo.
My friend reeled it in and we go him in the boat. Nimrod Mike and Moron myself tipped the canoo. the fish goes away, lunch gone, recovered all our gear though ![]() ![]()
