Warning. Old man rambling.
I've been reading the post about the kids ruining the a lake again and I got to thinking. How'd I get from being a dumb kid to where I am today? (Ok. I'm an old, fat, semi-bald kid, but that's beside the point.)
My dad didn't fish or hunt. I didn't have any brothers. What I did have was a creek full of fish, and a lot of time to kill. My grandfather and my uncle both fished and hunted though, and although they didn't "take" me fishing a lot, (after all they had to work 6-7 days a week.) what they did do, was open my eyes to how things are supposed to be done by subscribing to the greatest source of information a dumb kid growing up in the 50-60's ever saw. Outdoor magazines. In those days there were only three really. Field and Stream, Outdoor Life, and Sports Afield. Man those things were GREAT. I might never see a Muskie, but I knew about fishing for them. Grayling in Alaska? Man, I could help you out. Deer hunting in Texas? Elephants in Africa. Bass in Florida. Man I crisscrossed the world in the pages of those magazines. I read those things until they fell apart. I'd literally hide under the covers with a flashlight at night. But more importantly I learned the "RIGHT" way to "do it". A week or so ago, I got on my soapbox about someone tresspassing to catch a fish. Yep. I feel pretty strongly about such things because a long time ago guys like Homer Circle (yes, he's been around that long) and Al McClain, and Byron Dalrymple taught me that you just DON'T do that. You didn't snag fish, shoot birds on the ground, hunt our of season, take more than your limit, and so on. If you broke any of those unwritten rules, you were something that real sportsmen wouldn't have anything to do with. (Rather the "rule" was actually written or unwritten, didn't matter. They all had the force of LAW to those fellows.) So. What's the point of all this rambling? Well, just this. I suspect that most of us get a stack of hunting, fishing, and boating type magazines every month. We read 'em, toss in a stack until our mothers, wives, girlfriends, boyfriends, someone yells at us to get rid of them. We haul them out to the trash, or hide them in the garage in "case we need to look up something". Which of course we never do. How about next time, passing them on to a kid who might be interested? This does three things. It promotes an interest in the outdoors, it promotes an interest in reading. And just as importantly it get the stuff out of YOUR house and into someone elses for them to throw away, making the person who's been nagging you to get rid of them happy. Give a magazine to a kid. Who knows. You might start something. |
