Default water temperature?

Is it harder to catch bass in the heat of summer? My fishing hole was producing last week but we have had some really hot days since then and they don't seem to be biting anymore. Some experienced fishermen there told me that the water is too warm and that they are easily caught in early spring but summer provides little to no action. The pond is a fairly big pond that goes down about 20 feet. So is this true and am I wasting my time fishing in summer time?I am fishing from shore also.
