Smallmouth time in a tidal river (fresh water)
A boat landing at a nearby tidal river (but fresh water) is a popular place to fish around here. People regularly catch some sunfish, smallmouth, hornpout (brown bullhead), some trout, and striper.
For shore fishing, this is obviously quite a variety. Today I bought two inline spinners... both size 1. I'm looking to attempt two methods: 1. Use these inline spinners along with grubs and small worms to try and get the trout and smallmouth (and I'm sure sunfish will chase them too.) 2. Use my bigger worms and crankbaits to try for striper. Most people seem to be using bait (eels or bloodworms) when I'm there, but I'm going with my lures. As for this river... there's actually a stream that flows into it. Both usually have a medium current. There is very little wood or weed structure, but there are rocks. The stream isn't very deep in the middle, maybe 4-6 ft depending on tide, but fish go in there too. How does this sound to experienced stream/river fisherman? ??? I'm a lot more used to stillwater ponds. I've gone to this place a few times before and have caught one smallmouth (rooster tail) and a couple sunfish. Thanks for any advice. |
