Getting Ready for Tournament
Hey, I am stocking up on some stuff getting ready for the BFL tourney in Feb. I don't remember where I read this one at, but I read that for tournies, you could use clip swivel for fast lure changes. Has anyone done this, and is it effective?
Just wondering Travis |

Re: Getting Ready for Tournament
I would throw those swivels away except to use when spooning. you get much more action from the lure tieing direct to yhe o ring ............. Scott R

Re: Getting Ready for Tournament
Yea dont use swivels unless you are carolina-rigged or using a roostertail. Had to many swivels to come unhooked or straighten out. An extra minute or two wont take up that much time. Especially if you lose a 5lb because your swivel breaks.

Re: Getting Ready for Tournament
i use the plain duo lock clips WITHOUT swivels.i have never, ever had a clip open up and cause me to lose a fish.IMO only,i think the clip gives better action sometimes.if you use the clips,do not use split rings, that hinders the action.

I also use small duolock snaps, but I use them with split rings. But unlike Tom, I leave the split rings on, as I haven't experienced any problems doing it this way.

Trav-if this is what you are talking about:
I've used them before and they work pretty well. I just have more comfidence tying the lure on. |

Re: Getting Ready for Tournament
All I'm talking about is the swivels with the clips on them, buy them at wal-mart for like 77cents a bag.

Re: Getting Ready for Tournament
If that is the case I'd add a split ring to the bait if it does not have one and tie directly to that rather than use a swivel.

I'd go with the one Reb was showing you. They aren't that expensive-$2 for 10 at Wal-Mart and are very reliable.

Re: Getting Ready for Tournament
If you use one for spinnerbaits or buzzbaits, get some rubber tubing, ands cut a small piece to put over thr R bend before attaching, it keeps it from sliding around on the bait. It works real well. I'm not opposed to using them, just make sure you get the ones that are sturdy and have a little extra wire after it clips. I think they can actually help with flash sometimes.

Re: Getting Ready for Tournament
I wouldn't put those brass snap swivles on a kids Snoopy rod.
I'll use a good cross lock snap, like the ones Berkley sells, on a crankbait. I take the split ring off of them. On a bait like a spoon, I'll go with a good ball bearing swivel with a cross lock snap. They cost more, but they're worth it. Now for a Carolina Rig, I'll used the brass swivels. It's the snaps that are junk. |
