Welcome to the forums, first call em a rod instead of a pole, If your starting out get a 7' med-med heavy action, walmart is a good place to start

I doubt your gonna be doing anything other than fishing off banks if your just beggining so get a 6-6'6 med action rod with a spinning reel. If you are gonna be fishing from a boat get wat boise basser said.

as long as it is short enough and stiff enough that u can feel a very small twitch in your line.
