I have a Mercury 200 HP motor. Most of the time it runs great but twice this has happened and I don't what causes it. Does anyone have any suggestion? When I throttle up it hesitates and seems to bog down then all at once it takes off like lightning. Someone told me what it was doing was dumping to much fuel in the carbs and it was trying to compensate. This past weekend I used the boat alot and the last day it done this.

RUNNER,
Sounds to me like it is time to take it to a good factory trained Merc mechanic. It is hard to tell from here, but it sounds like the carbs need cleaned, if it is a carb equipped motor. JackL |

Had a mercury motor that used to do the exact same thing. Took it to the merc. man and it ended up needing new floats in the carbs. The little pins had worked groves in them over the years, and it was letting just a tad to much fuel in the carbs. Easy fix, was less than $100 parts and labor

Had a mercury that did this once. Motor was a 80s model.
At the fuel filter there was an O ring. I had to replace this every couple of years. It would cause air to be sucked into the fuel line. Take off your cowling, hook up the fuel line, and pump it. Look for any leaks and listen to any hissing sounds. Good luck! |
