smallies
I have done a search and can't find anything on it, so maybe some of you guys can help me.
There is a lake that I am going to be going to in a couple of days that has an area with nothing but big boulders in about 4 foot of water and it is clear as can be. I have read that smallies like to cling to rocks and clear water. I was thinking some tubes and some YUM Crawbugs would be the best thing to try. Am I correct on this? If not, what should I try? I have never fished for smallies exclusively and would love to hook into a couple. |

Re: smallies
also try a crank in crawdad. hit it against the rocks and let it sit for a sec. then reel it in again. what is the temp? i would think its still cold? so go slow.

Re: smallies
I am assuming the water temp is in the mid 50's. I haven't been to this spot this year, but it is in a nice open, sunny area and the water temp there has usually been a little higher through the summer due to the water clarity and the open area.

Re: smallies
1/2oz Chartruse spinnerbait with chartruse blades. I think I spelled that correctly.

Re: smallies
Smallies are mainly all I fish and if the water temp in in the low 50's a spinner bait would be a good choice, however if the spinnerbait is slow try a suspending jerkbait with a long pause this works very well for me. Also try a Zoom super fluke, add some weight to the hook and let it fall next to these boulders and watch the slack in your line, smallies will ignite a fluke.

Re: smallies
Thats for sure, you can't work a jerk bait slow enough this time of year, try various retrieves, get a nice slow cadence going and let it stop then give it a nother series of twitches, many times when you start back up you get a strike, if its clear I would throw the clown...

Re: smallies
They are hitting 3/16 oz. hair jigs with an Uncle Josh 101 pork trailer here on Pickwick. LONG way from clear water like you described though.

Re: smallies
Also try a 4-5 inch grub in browns, blacks, and greens, with a small weight like 1/4 or smaller, also tubes, soft and hard jerkbaits, lizards, and crawfish imitation baits. good luck.
