minn kota powerdrive. good or bad?
I found a used minn kota powerdrive that was reconditioned at a minkota factory shop. it is a late 90s model 42# and they are asking $200 for it with a 50 day warranty. I never had a power drive before, are they a good motor? I have used an all terrain for years with good results. this motor has alot more moving parts them a all terrain. thats what concerns me.
Thanks for any info guys |

Re: minn kota powerdrive. good or bad?
Is that the one that uses an electric motor to turn it, as opposed to a push/pull cable?
If that's the one I'm thinking of, I've never used one, but the universal knock on them is that they're slow to turn. Not really slow, just that there is a lag between the time you tell it to do something and the time it does it. Some people love 'em, some hate 'em. |

Yep, i guess it has an electric motor that turns like the cable normally would.

Re: minn kota powerdrive. good or bad?
From what I understand, people who use them to troll for say crappies or walleyes love them. They tend to use them in open water, and more to hold a straight line than you might for working down a bank bass fishing. They can work off the back of the boat with the longer steering cable right where the livewell is, (I've seen crappie fishermen at Buggs Island doing this. Looks funny to see a boat going along with no one on the front deck.) and the deck is wider for more rod holders.
For bass fishing I think there are better choices. |

Re: minn kota powerdrive. good or bad?
I don't need to buy another motor anymore. I fixed my old mercury thruster plus. the switch was getting shorted out. This is an older motor but it pulls really well even in river current. I use this on my Sea Nymph for river bass and ducks. My main bass boat has a minn kota all terrain that works great.
I'm really glad i didn't have to spent that extra $200-300. I will run the mercury till it dies. (does anybody have any idea when these thruster plus motors were made. I'm just wondering. I would guess maybe 1990? |

Re: minn kota powerdrive. good or bad?
Mercury made a couple of motors that were called "Thruster"s. Â*One was made in the 70's and 80's and had a big prop that ran through a gear reduction. Â*The other one was made for a while in the late 80's early 90's or so and was really just a Motor Guide with the Thruster name on it.
The original Thruster was a pretty good motor. Â*I think it had one of the best foot controls ever made. The other one was a Motor Guide. No better or worse than any other Motor Guide. |

Bought a boat with a power gluide on it. I think it was like 42 lb thrust.
The "chip" quit and the previous owner ordered another one. That one quit before I got the boat, I called for estimates on a new one. They said 200$. I pulled that thing off and "pitched it". Went to mecury thruster. |

Re: minn kota powerdrive. good or bad?
when i first bought my stratos the place i bought it sent my self and there mechic down to the lake to make sure every thing worked out. it had a minkota allterrian on it the tech dropped the tm in the lake on high punched the button we went about 30 yards and the moter started puring smoke out the top -head- i told the tech i wanted nothing to do with a minnkota -had them before- he put a moter guide on the boat and it never gave me any problems-till i snapped the shaft-i replaced it with a moter guide and have had NO problems with it since.
to be honest i may upgrade it to a digital moter guide cause it has the remote control. zooker

Re: minn kota powerdrive. good or bad?
I had a Motorguide for 3 days and the drive shaft broke. It was not solid or stable inside; looked plastic. I had always had MK before and decided to use another. Sorry I did. I bought another MK and have not had one minutes trouble with it. I will stick with MK. I guess its like anything else, some are good/some are lemons.
