drain pipe bass
around my old neighbourhood there were alot of very large ponds all connected to each other, all with lots of good bass fishing. in several of those thick metal pipes that connect one pond to the other i remember there used to be some huge bass. i mean these were some hawgs, i was scared if i hooked one it would eat me. but the problem was no matter what i tried i couldnt get one. i tried spinnerbaits, jigs, plastic craws, worms. at first i tried getting behind the pipe so they couldnt see me and just danging a bait in front of them, well that just scared them away. so then i tried a slow retreive with a spinnerbait and jig in deeper water. obviously they saw it but none of them even went for it. man those drain pipe bass are hard to figuire out. any suggestions?

Culvert Fishing
I can only speak for bass fishing in Florida. It is NOT the same in the other states due to the very different conditions.
In Florida, especially central and south Florida, the millions of miles of "waterfront" real estate are connected by culverts under the roadways. In the colder weather, these pipes are usually the deepest and warmest water in the area. Small baits, light weights and a distant cast with a stealthy approach is often productive. The stealthy approach is less critical in heavy traffic areas but the fishing is usually as productive as the quieter areas. I don't claim to know it all, just a lot more than an old man from Kansas. we have small water pipes that the bass here hold on it and around it. we just found them last month, so we havent totally figured them out yet,but i caught 4 from it with a drop shotted shad colored straight tailed 4'' plastic worm. it is in about 8-10 feet of water that is usaully pretty clear.

here are some pictures of these culverts. so if anyone knows about the behaviour of the bass that like to hang out in them, please post what you know. it seemed to me they are lazy, the ones i have observed are big big fish, and they just sit in those culverts all day long. i just couldnt get em to bite.

I fish a pipe somewhat like that and the only things that work are real worms, the jointed minnow from rapala(i use the black and silver one in the smallest size) or smaller plastic worms. For some reason they don't take anything big near pipes so try maybe a 4" senko.

Try a small hair jig. See what happens. They might fall for that.

i tried some of those things. it just seems like any lure or bait i put in front of them just irritates them. they wont eat and they swim out of the pipes into deeper water when they see the lure. i bet these fish are anorexic or something haha.

We have a sewage treatment plant in our town that returns clean water that in the spring is a couple of degrees warmer and cooler in the summer. We get them on cranks in 8-10' in rocks, sometimes on tubes, and always on wacky rigs.

I fish drain pipes like this alot and I toss one of my Sink-N-Fool's (a sinking stick bait) up into the pipe as far as I can on the downstream side. If it has much current just let it drift out with the current reeling to just keep the slack out of the line. I fish red shad or my new green shad color mostly in the pipes and get many many nice fish this way. The secret is to just keep the line tight enough to feel the bait if a fish takes it but not enough to move the bait with the line.
I hooked into the biggest bass of my life last summer doing just this on one of my super Sink-N-Fool's a 10" sinking bait with a 8/0 worm hook in it. But the fish cut me off in the rocks that were just below there I was fishing. I was using 20lb. fluorocarbon too. I did get a very good look at the fish though and my best guess would put it around 9 to 10 1/2 pounds. With a state record here of 10. 8 pounds that's a whale for this neck of the woods. Aaaaaaah but next year she is mine! Try this and a can guarantee you get some nice fish www.fishnfoollures.com Last edited by Fish-N-Fool Lures; 01-03-06 at 03:24 AM. Reason: typos |

well theres a good chance you can find that same bass in that pipe. ive noticed that the ones that stay around the pipes dont move around too much. they'll be there everyday if you go take a peek in that pipe.
