line for crank baits

I'm gonna use 10lb test on my spinning reel for crankbaits,the only thing I started to think about is what happens when I get hungup on an object?
This line will not be strong enuff to with stand me yanking on it to retreive it.I want to use 10lb (lite line) to get max. depth.any idea's

Denny, I have 3 crankbait rods-for lipless cranks I use 12 lb, for BIG cranks-think DD22s-I use 12, and for regular lipped baits I use 10 lb. for the same reason-better depth. Never had a problem. I just check my line often and retie when neccesssary. This past weekend I caught 4-5 on a shallow running crank in the timber and didn't get hung once thanks to the square bill. I'd go with 10 and see how it works-you can always move up.

I use Trilene XL smooth casting line,but that's not mono is it?If not does Trilene make a mono line?

trilene XL is a mono and one of the best to stick with it and you will never have any problem

yes trilene xl and xt are mono lines, and even better than mono, go with 20lb. powerpro, only a 6lb. diameter, so it will get your bait down deeper...

How do you guys rate Yo-Zuri 10lb. test for cranking? That is what I just spooled up with and intend to use on my cranking setup.

I like to use Trilene Sensation for cranking. It wouldn't hurt you to use 12 lb., I use 12 lb. frequently on crankbaits.

I have a couple lines I like for cranking. The lb. test is really a matter of preference, but also there are some typical guidelines that are basic common sense. I'm not going to use 8-10lb test on my shallow running cranks around stumps, rip rap or any other type of heavy cover. Just setting yourself up for frustration. General guideline would be to use the heaviest lb test you can get away with while maintaing adequate contact with the cover you're fishing. In shallow water of 5FOW or less you can get away with 20lb line. If you're not getting the depth you want just pick a crank with appropriate running depth to get you back in the strike/reaction zone.

Personally, I use, 12-20lb test on shallow cranks, 14lb test on lipless baits, and 10-12lb test for baits that run 10 foot or deeper. I'll even go with 8lb if I'm using wood/balsa baits.

Sensation does not have the abrasion resistence needed for cranking. Remember, if you're not bouncing off the bottom or cover, you're losing effectives. Your line has to be able to take a beating. XL, yeah, it casts great, but it gets cut up easy. The best cranking line you can buy is Trilene XT. I run 12 lb, 10 if i want to be a little stealthier. last year, during a small tournament, i had 10 mins to fish on some rocks. i was throwing a crank, bouncing off the bottom when i landed a 1.5 lb smallie. i had a huge gouge in my line, but i threw anyway and landed a 3 lb lm on 14 lb xt. really illustrated why you need an abrasion resisting line. i have no idea what other companies like stren or yo-zuri have to offer. i use all berkely products with power pro being the exception.

As mentioned in other posts, I prefer McCoy Mean Green. The line is super strong and somewhat abrasion resistant. Not much memory and not too expensive.

All you power pro guys, if you are using mono for your cranks, you might want to give the McCoy Mean Green a try.
