Default Need tips on tying and un tying baits

I am a beginner, but i have noticed i am real slow at changing my setups while fishing, just wondering if there is anything i can use or do, to make this process faster, example say im using a hook and minnows, but thats not working so i go to tie a spinnerbait on, most people can change in seconds, it seems like it takes forever.

Thanks

There are several options. You can use snaps or snap swivels, but, and this is EXTREMELY important-use the locking kind-they will be called cross-lock or something like that. My suggestion, though is to just tie to your line using a Palomar knot:

http://powerpro.com/using/palomar.asp

Very quick and easy to tie and also very strong. I've even tied it wearing winter gloves, and believe me, the need to wear gloves in South Texas in winter are few and far between, so I'm not at all used to wearing them but can still tie it.

ive noticed that pros have there setups set up before they get on the water. which means they have plenty of poles.

If I had to change from minnows to a spinnerbait I'd first slide the bobber down(if you use one) and then bite the line. Take off the minnow, chuck it in the tank. Throw the hook and bobber in the bag, and tie a knot onto the spinnerbait in like 5secs.

It takes you a min to tie a palomar, geez.

BTW, am I the only person here that bites their line? I can cut everything up to 50lb mono and 30lb braided with my teeth.

well,
it is a simple process for me. Cut the line tie with a clinch knot, cut off excess and cast, all done with in the minute or just bout 35 seconds.

As bassfisher02 said, the best thing you can do is practice. When I first started fishing I was amazed at the variety of knots. I now pretty much use only a cinch knot and have become pretty proficient at tying one, but only after lots of practice. Also, I have found that it really speeds up the process to have your tackle organized and very accessible using a good tackle box or bag.

I don't both untying my lures, knives tend to be a lot quicker. Find out how to tie the palomar knot and practice practice practice, after awhile you'll see it only take a short moment. Windy days can make it a little more dificult. Another option would be to start using snap clips, but they don't help the action and can spook the bass in clear water. I'd recomend learning the palomar and sticking to it.

sounds like a fishing story to me, I can barely get the line doubled through the eye in less than 10 seconds either way, pushing the loop through the eye or slip the tag through the eye, grab the line and back through. Â*I'd believe less than 20 seconds cause it don't take long after getting it through the eyes, but consistantly getting it through there that fast, sounds like a fishing story.

I can but I don't. I have a line clipper on a retractable key ring I keep on my belt. Saves my teeth ;D.

Hey Rodman i found a trick for tying a hook on with a palomar you might know it but it speeds up the feeding the line through the hole process! Just put the line through (single strand) then push the hook up the line then come back with the end of the line and put it through the hole and you have you double strand through the hole in much less time! Hope i explained it well!

I already employ that technique but only when using thick line, or a tiny eye hole like an aberdeen hook.

bf02, 8 seconds huh, good story, but the ending isn't believable. If we ever meet you'll have to demonstrate your lightning fast palomar technique.

I can't belive no one has said nail clippers .put one in your pocket. easy to cut line safe for rough waters, or a lighter but they don't work in the rain.

Â*Robby. oh ya pratice makes perfection. sit in front of the tv or when your driving a long way take some line and practice.

8 seconds on a PERFECT day.....im going with 10 on an eecceptionable day....and if its reall sh!tty weather anywhere from 11-20......especially if its cold and my hands are shaking like crazy......but i practise when im bored and i have gotten very good at it.....also i need to be quick when im shore fishin because i only bring one rod/reel and when changing baits i need to be quick.....

hula....30lb braid with your teeth i cant even cut 20lb braid with nail clippers......much less my teeth...i have to use a knife with it...

rob, i use clippers but not when im using braid...only when i use mono.
