Reel Speed Ratio

Whats up everyone,

I was reading up on reel speed and can't decide between a medium speed reel like a 5.08:1, or a high speed reel like 6.18:1. I was planing to use it with my Carolina Rig Rod, and have read that a faster speed ratio is good because a carolina rig can be fished as fast as a crankbait. But with a madium speed reel you can fish it fast or slow for the colder months.

Then there the super high speed Team Daiwa Advantage 6.3:1 ratio.

Undicided, any advice.

I'm a firm believer in 6:1. When setting the hook you can catch up on line much quicker than with 5:1. Also you can retrieve your line in faster for another cast.

All my reels are 6.3:1 except 2. One is my crankbait rod which is 5.1:1 for more winching power when using deep divers and on my spinnerbait rod because I tend to fish spinnerbaits too fast with a 6.3:1.

I like a 6.3:1 for a C-rig because you have to move a lot of line with it and the high speed reel lets you keep up with it.

I have both, but I am going against the popular vote. I say the 5.08:1 is a great gear ratio.It will be on the slower side retriveing lures, but its not that much slower that you notice a big difference and it gives you more cranking power which is why I like them alot better. The slower ratio works crankbaits and spinnerbaits at a normal cranking without having to remind your self to slow down like you do when fishing a 6.3:1 ratio reel.For those who think they are not fast enough to keep up with a fish should learn to use the rod tip end also to keep up with the fish.7'0" rods also help, you don't have to move the rod tip very far in order to catch up to the fish . All of my baitcast reels are 6.2:1 and after fishing deep diving crankbaits for a while with them I'm definitely thinking about gowing with a lower gear ratio on my next reel. You can wear yourself out pretty quick fishing a 6.2:1 gear ratio reel with cranks.

I tend to fish everything too fast, so I have gone to the slower speed reels. I do have a couple of 6.2:1 reels for buzz baits and the like.

all of mine are 5-1 except one 6-3-1 I use for buzzbaits n zara spookin'

Ya really should look at number of ball bearings in my opinion,, esp important in spinning gear too

i personally like a 5.3 to 1 reel.i think for most applications it is better suited.most people fish way to fast and a 5.3 helps slow you down.there are applications such as burning spinnerbaits and rattletraps where a 6.3 is a better reel in the sense that you don't have to reel as fast as with a 5.3.personally this doesn't bother me as i find it easier to reel faster then to slow down.

Thanks to everyone who replie. I bought my reel on friday, it s the Quantum Energy E600PT. It's the 6.18:1 due to popular demand. ;D. It feels great on my new
G-loomis. I am going to go on a fishing rampage this weekend starting thursday night, ending sunday. I am going to fish and fish and fish and fish and have a Bass..
Ale, then I am going to fish and fish and...party, and fish.

You won't go wrong with that reel!
6 ball bearings and all the smoothness ya can handle!
After I had all of my Shimano's stolen I replaced 4 of them with this reel and then went ahead and bought the shimano curado, but was amazed at how much better the Quantum Energy E600PT line fit my needs.
