this is the 2nd time i've posted this website for bluegill... please stop wasting our time with this nonsense...you know how to use the search button.. good luck in your bluegill/rock bass quest. |

Re: Bluegill/Bream
a 1/16th ounce or 1/32 jig
try one of these tipped with bee larva (wax worm) or a tiny piece of earthworm, I'd use a light weight styrofoam bobber |

Re: Bluegill/Bream
I absolutely LOVE to bream fish. I catch 95% of my fish on live bait...specifically crickets. But, in the past when I couldn't find any crickets, the best artificial bait I've found is a keystone minnow. They tend to work really well in ponds & creeks.
I hope this helps ya! |

Re: Bluegill/Bream
Try the smallest rooster tail you can find. Or the little plastic Mr. Twisters, anything that says it's a crappie bait you can use for the bream.

Re: Bluegill/Bream
Bassintom,
Amen!!! The least they could do is put it in the non-bass related topic section. But hey that is just my two cents! Kybasser |

Re: Bluegill/Bream
whats this? they do have a non-fishing related section! who would have thought? what i like to do for crappie is cut up some dog and use that, works like a charm : but for artificials, i like to take a bobber and hook, thats all, and cast it out and let it sit. altho, it seems that the fish are just not biting. i will leave out the bobber and hook all day with out one hit? but im sure it will work : maybe i should put alittle piece of dog on it ??? ;D

Re: Bluegill/Bream
If you catch any small bream (smaller than your hand) put one on a bigger hook behind the dorsal fin and on a big bobber and see if you can't catch a big bass.
Iv'e seen times when people were fishing a pond and would hook a small bream and before they could get it in an 8 lb bass would bite the bream. |

Re: Bluegill/Bream
I've found that here in colorado you can catch trout anywhere on an elk haired cattis, this seems to be holding true for the blue gill, the other night I went ten cast in a row with a fish. The best way I have found is to use a small filable buble, with a 3 ft of lead on it, fill the bubble so it will ride under the surface and you have a greater casting distance, reel it in just fast enough not to make a wake on the surface... good luck!

Re: Bluegill/Bream
Since NYS has a closed season for bass and pickerel, we are forced to fish for trout and panfish from 4/1-5/8 (when picks open). A few things to remember:
At this time of year mega spawning is going on by most species and this is a shallow water happening. Not all species are in the shallows for the spawn - every fish not spawning are in there to invade nests and gobble up fry as they emerge. With that in mind, 1/8 oz jigheads may be too large for panfish and instead, 1/32-1/64 oz. heads work far better because of they allow a swimming glide of soft plastics. There are an infinite number of small soft plastics that will catch all species this time of year and I have experimented with about 40 so far: Brewer's slider grub Fin S Fish - 2" (Lunker City) in bass Mr. Twiser 2" double tail grub Bass Pro's 3" Spring Grub Bass Pro's tri-color crappie grub Sassy Shad or Squirmin Shad with the belly cut off Tiny Brush Hogs Bass Assassin rat tail grubs small 2" tubes (with or without bobber) others: small hair jigs small in-line spinners and Swedish Pimple Spoons 2" Gene Larew Speed jerkbaits and 2" Rapalas These are just a few of the hundreds of lures that will catch all species (even carp and some catfish) and don't be surprised to hook into large bass or pickerel mixed in the panfish schools. 6-8 lb test is the max you want to use and a Power Pro leader (20/6) works great for toothy critters, used with a light drag. Light spinning is a must. Think emerging weed beds and stick-up in 3' or less and make long casts over flats. I don't know about other areas in the country, but the action this year has been incredible. SS |

Re: Bluegill/Bream
Yup ya cant beat a white rooster tail for those warmouth gills hear
I've tried inline spinnerbaits and have some success but 99% of the time i go with the conventional spinner bait |

Re: Bluegill/Bream
Berkly makes a fake earthworm called a Micros, plastic and scented. Put on a little tiny hook about a foot deep and wait. Works just as good as bread. Only reason I know they work so well is I tend to use them to catch bluegills for bass bait.
