Default Bassin' from the banks..a newbie here

hello all..great forum!
i have a question..i found several ponds that are VERY, VERY hard to get to and you need a SMALL boat to fish them (my 14ft is TOO BIG) or the bank..well, i started using the bank and have spotty luck in the fish i have caught..mostly 1-2 lb smallies BUT i am told there are some BIG FISH in these ponds and some BIG LARGEMOUTHS as well..any suggestion how to fish for them effectively from the bank and what lures?

since i am fishing from the bank, a top water, buzzbait, VERY SHALLOW crank or spinner seems to be in order..from another forum, i saw that the jitterbug in black was a "go to" for many people and it seemed to be a bait for this type of fishing so i bought one and my first time out, i caught 8 bass in various size in the 2.5 range..a big step up and i was VERY, VERY impressed!
the water varies from 2-15 feet (some areas drop straight down) and from SLOP around the edges out a good ways to clear water with heavy undergrowth of hydrillia (about a foot under the water top)..

any and all suggestions will be tried!

can't believe i waited this long to be a bass fisherman!

thanks..

Promeetheeus,

I usually fish from the bank as well, and I've fished in ponds similar to the one you are describing. A shallow-diving crankbait and a spinnerbait seem to get the job done for me. A weightless worm, and a single-tail grub also produces for me too. You should just try different lures and see what happens... There are days when I go out there and get skunked !!! But all in all, still fun... Good luck !

Oh, welcome to the fourm !

I like using spider jigs when fishing from the bank.

Welcome to the board Promeetheeus, if your 14 footer is too big, maybe a float tube or a kickboat might be the way to fish your pond.

Hands down the absolutely best, positively most bass catching pond bait is a WEIGHTLESS LIZARD

I took my little one fishing from shore yesterday afternoon. I started out with a small spinner bait and used that for about 30 minutes and nothing, I started to notice the fish were hitting the top of the water so I put on a buzz bait and within 15 minutes I had reeled in three and missed two. It all depends on what the fish are hungy for I think.

Default wave worms

I am new here to but not new to bass fishing I believe folks are gonna get sick of hearing about these wave worms. Try them on a weightless texas rig you can pull them up about a foot and then let them drop or you can give them a small quick tug just enough to make them dance. There are only two colors i use baby bass pearl for clear water and sweet potato pie for murky water. Here is the web address www.wavefishing.com SET THE HOOK!!!!!

Lizards! What size/color and what kind of rigging do you use? I only have one color of junebug, and I Texas rigged it, but let it sink then slowly reeled it. Nothing. Any suggestions?

I don't know if this would help you but I always use the color red for just about any fish. I always get eather garlic and salted lizards. You should try a 6" lizard or a weightless lizard too. I hope I was a help and as always good luck at fishing!

I actually caught a couple bass last week on a black wacky rigged lizard (6") at night. I've been told they are better tex rigged so you can get the swimming motion with the arms and whatnot...

My favorite color is Black, then Black, and Black. I also like green pumpkin, and junebug. I always use a twitch, twitch, pause cadence, with the fish determining how fast LOL. Sometimes you need to work it as slow as a rock, other times a quick pace is good. You can even just slowly reel it in at times an get some hits. There just isn't a bad way to fish a lizard, unless it's too fast or too slow for that day. Most folks do fish them too fast however.
