Buzzbaits in shallow water
When throwing a buzzbait in water less than 3' deep and the fish misses the bait then how do you catch it ?
Too shallow for worms , (grassy area), tryed the buzzbait again then tryed a spinnerbait. No fish. No strikes. No nothin. Confused and lookin for answers. |

Re: Buzzbaits in shallow water
I have seen this happen too many times to mention. Usually once youve missed one on the buzzbait, he isn't going to hit it again. The best thing to do is throw a plastic out there, but if the grass is too thick, then you are just SOL.
Put you a trailer hook on that buzzbait. That way you won't miss the next one. |

Re: Buzzbaits in shallow water
you could try changing the color of the buzzer. I have seen this work numerous times.
My experiance has taught me that when a bass blows up on, but does not take a buzzbait, he is eithr not hungry and just trying to shut it the hell up, or he may be semi aggresive, and just want a different size/color. IIf a bass is truly in an aggressive feeding pattern, he will EAT the buzzbait. You can also throw a spook, popper, floating worm,Soft Jerkbait, propbait, . Personally, i would use the floating worm. They can make an awesome follow up bait in shallow water. JMO, Charles |

Re: Buzzbaits in shallow water
When do you set the hook with a buzzbait?
Do you set it right away, or wait after the bass has taken it underwater for like a second... (I've yanked too many buzzbaits right out of a bass's mouth Â* > Â* Â*:'( ) seaphantom |

Re: Buzzbaits in shallow water
You should be able to feel the fish putting pressure on then set the hook. You will not need a big hookset either!

Re: Buzzbaits in shallow water
Try a soft jerkbait like a Super fluke or a Senko-type bait, and ditto on the trailer hook-I don't throw one without it.

Uh.
3 ft, too shallow for worms? 3 inches isn't too shallow for worms. Unless you're using a weight, I guess. |

Re: Buzzbaits in shallow water
If they blow up on it and don't take it, toss the buzz bait again. If they blow up on it and take the bait but you miss the fish, then try something different. I have to echo what everyone said. Poppers, spook, fluke etc.

Re: Buzzbaits in shallow water
If you look at the hit-catch ratios for fish on a buzzbait, well, the fish have the advantage. You will always miss more fish on a buzzbait than you will catch, but hey, at least you got to see them blow up on it. Anyway, as far as what to throw behind a buzzbait, well, the first thing I would throw back at the fish is a buzzbait. It might hit it again. If that doesn't work, well, I like something small and subtle. I will most of the time back it up with a floating worm, or a slightly wieghted tube.I don't like to throw a t-rig worm behind a buzzbait, everybody does that. As far as setting the hook on a buzzbait, well, I think a buzzbait is a little different from most topwater baits. I set the hook as soon as I see the hit. That fish is a lot faster than any fisherman out there, and because a buzzbait is continually moving, and most strikes are out of aggression or reaction, the fish either has it or it doesn't it. There is no in- between with a bait like this.

Re: Buzzbaits in shallow water
Some pretty good responses. Heres my 2 cents. I would throw the buzzbait again, and if that didn't work, throw a fluke of some sort. As for setting the hook, I set it if I a) see the fish go down with my buzzbait, or b)I feel the fish, usually this is the same time since you have constant pressure on the line as you're reeling. It is a lot like a spinner bait being constantly retrieved, as soon I feel something hit it I set the hook. They won't hold on to either a buzzbait or a spinner for very long .

Re: Buzzbaits in shallow water
Bassbooger: I use a trailer about any time that I throw a buzzbait.
Bassboss: Changing color might have made a difference, however, this occurence was right at day light or just before daylight. Dark colors usually work well. Seaphantom: normally as soon as I feel the fish. Bassguy2004: I threw the same bait several more times, then I went with a spinnerbait, nothing. Zooker: Badin Perhaps a floating worm,or a senko, may have made the difference. Hope I got all, thanks for the suggestions. |

Bassman30 I didn't say use a spinnerbait, I said use a popper, or a spook. If you would have listened to me you might have caught her.

Sorry about that Bassguy2004.
Zooker, we were behind an island, way on down the lake on the left. I caught several good fish at this island when we practiced. |

Re: Buzzbaits in shallow water
My personal experience is that if a bass comes in contact with a buzzbait or other topwater, I can't get a strike. If the fish boils (breaks the surface but misses the lure entirely), then it may very well take that same lure or another topwater or a followup soft plastic.
After all these years, I'm still indecisive about whether to follow up with the topwater again or the soft plastic, although conditions will sometimes determine what I do. For what's it's worth, my most recent experience with this was a few days ago with a Jitterbug, and I stuck with it, catching the bass four or five casts later. In this particular case, I stuck with the Jitterbug because it was too far for casting my soft plastic, besides, it was close enough to dark that I couldn't see my line, so that decision wasn't very difficult. |

Re: Buzzbaits in shallow water
Zook.
We caught bream each time we fished Badin. They hit pointers, crankbaits, and definetely worms. Going to Jordan on the 18th for another tournament. Need to practice up. Going this weekend and expect the water to be thick and muddy enough to walk on. Maybe in the south end it'll be ok. We're going to try again next week and see if we can find something over the 16" size limit. Last year was pretty good,we won that event. But we don't know how this one will turn out. |
