Me and a buddy of mine built a wooden jon a couple of years ago. Had a bunch of useless pine wood laying around the garage and spent about 2 hours putting the thing together. It was about 4 feet wide and 9 feet long. Then we spent about 20 minutes painting a big shark face on the front end of it like a WWII plane and dubbed it "Ironsides." I'd like to note that the caulk did not work very well for sealing up areas where leaks could occur and we ended up having to bail the thing out after about an hour on a lake in my neighborhood. Any breeze we had would take us across the lake in about 2 seconds, but it was an entertaining experience nonetheless.

#1 every wooden boat ever built leeks like a sive. this is normal i used to work on my fathers 46 pennyann the auto bilge would kick on every 2 mintues. this was a barrel stern boat. it housed a flat head linline 6 moter.
never use chalk to patch leeks. always use tared hemp-rope- the rope was pounded in to the bigger leeks with a chisel and mallet. smaller leeks we would pull apart the rope and use a smaller piece of tared rope using a screw driver and mallet we would pound it in. every winter we would replace the bad boards -which is anything but fun- the boat was built from mohogany with teak top deck. after the new board was in place we would chink it. -same thing the chink log houses with-we then coated it with an epoxy resin to the entire hull.the trick to the boards making a good fit is they have to be green not kiln dryed or seasoned. the green wood is more flexable and it swells when wet. up on the time my father sold this boat it ran like a top. it topped out at 30 miles and hour. but remember it was a wooden 19 foot boat it wieghed around 5000 pounds-tandum axel trailer-

if your going for more of the fun of building it.......? then go ahead, but it is eay to get around if you get an aluminum boat, but that would take out the sense of pride in building ur own boat

Don't do it! My dad and I spent about 500 bucks on plans and materials, got it about halfway done, looked at it and said, what the heck is this supposed to be. And my dad is a building contractor. However, if you want plans for a 15 foot catamaran, PM me. Can't guarantee sucess, but you'll save 50 bucks or so.

If you just want to go fishing and you think you'll be saving money by building your own....your wrong. If you look in your classified adds in your paper you can find a good 14' jon boat for around 200 bucks. My friend just found a 14 footer for 50 bucks from some old guy who had no use for it anymore, look around!

Plans for many boats can be found here:
http://www.bateau.com/

There is also quite a bit of info on the basic steps of building a boat.
