burning baits

What situations are ideal for burning spinnerbaits or other types of baits? Is it a good idea to use this tactic to try and entice a reaction strike if the fish wont bite? Thanks for the help

If nothing is bitting, find a good colored crankbait that rattles and burn it thro the water. It will make the fish go nuts and they will want to try to make it stop. How do they do that you ask? They strick!

when the water is 72+ is a good time to burn baits. the bass will be aggrasive. its a good thing to do.

I don't know there is right time so to speak, I just try it and see if it works.

As 02 said burning baits is a better technique for agressive fish. When they are hard to catch and sluggish they don't want to chase anything. This is the time to slow down and fish a worm or jig.

bigjim, burning a bait is reeling it in as fast as you can. It works especially well with lipless crankbaits like Rat-L-Traps and spinnerbaits.

Reeling it fast. Can be done with a crankbait, spinnerbait, or possibly even a buzzbait. Its used to trigger a reaction strike. When burning a spinnerbait just under the surface its called waking a spinnerbait.

I will say that SOMETIMES when they won't bite anything, that burning a spinnerbait or crank WILL WORK. I have usually had success in and around weed cover. It IMO gets down to their basic instinct of reaction. It must be close to them(in the cover), but it can actually create the start of a feeding frenzy. Now this tactic does not always work I will say. But it does occasionally. If the fish aren't biting it sure as heck isn't gonna hurt to try it

it worked real well so far this spring here in ny.i did it with a bleeding chrome / blue 1/2 oz. rattletrap and caught some nice ones.we are still pre spawn here in ny.i also find it good on overcast days in up to 50 feet of water when the bass are chasing shad.spinnerbaits and ratlletraps are great in the summer over weedbeds.try it and see where it works for you.
