how do u catch the one that gets away?
today i want fishing in about a 1/2 acre pond and started working a rapala in about 7ft of water on a steady incline and nothing was biting so i tried doing a slow retrieve and this HUGE bass came rite up and just sorta sniffed it and swam away. i spent 2 hours chacing it around that dinky pond and just could not get him to bite. tried just about every type of lure i have and still nothing. got about 6 1lb, so i guess it wasnt all bad.
but does anybody have any advice. p.s. this is NOT a fish story this sucker had to be every bit of 5lbs |

Well, you had him sniffing at it, so that would be when I would either downsize the bait or throw something like a Zoom Super Fluke. Then again, sometimes nothing works, but you know where he is so maybe another day you will get him.

A floating worm also works well....I've heard of people following up with stickbaits but can't say I've witnessed it in action..

Re: how do u catch the one that gets away?
I've had the same thing happen to me once.
I was fishing a big pond, and I looked down in front of me about 5 feet out was a single bass just sitting there. I didn't see any beds, so I don't know for sure what her was doing. I threw every bait in my tackbox at him. One time he came at a worm, but then turned, and went the otehr direction. I think it might ahve been because he could see me standing there, but I don't know. I went back again a week later and there he was again. I had live bait this time. I dropped a shiner in fron tof him, and he just wen tthe other way. To this day I still wonder what was up with that fish. |

Buddy and I had the same thing happen to us once.
In a tournament no less. And it wasn't one fish, there must have been 50 fish about 3-5 busting the top up on that flat. We too could see the fish. They wouldn't hit ANYTHING we threw. That's why they call it fishing, and not catching. |

Well some will agree and some will not, however, from experience, I have found that you can spook a bass just like you can spook trout. Sometimes all it takes is to cast a shadow over them. I have Seen it MANY times. It depends on the fish. When I get a fish like that, I fish VERY, VERY slowly with Plastics. If I cant trigger a strike from speed, I will annoy it until it picks it up. And IT will sooner or later.

Been told by a few different people if you get interest with one reel in fast and follow up with a plastic or something different than what your throwing.

DIE HARD,
If it was "sniffing" at the lure, it must have been a "DOG FISH" JackL |
