Using different lures
Do any of y'all find yourself using certain baits and then after a while they seem to fall out of favor and you don't use them anymore? For me a Jitterbug is a good example. When I was a kid I threw one all the time, and now I hardly ever do-I can't remember the last time I threw one. It is a great lure and catches fish, I just don't seem to ever tie one on. Same with the old 6" curl tail worm. Threw one constantly as a kid, but now it is creature baits or soft jerkbaits. Just got to thinking about that and wondered if I was alone in this-I kind of doubt it ;D

Re: Using different lures
seems as new baits come out...the old ones kinda end up in that old tackle box in the corner next to your favorite snoopy rod that you used as a kid.....we all have that snoopy rod in the corner.....and that tackle box :-/ and as time goes on....that tackle box begins to fill...and alittle more dust collects on the zebco......and you really cant help it......unless you never use a new bait again...which is just about impossible with the breed of monkey these days. ;D

Re: Using different lures
Red Devil Spoons are one for me. It really was the only lure other than plastic worms that growing up I would use and did catch plenty of bass on them. Since I've become addicted, I still haven't thrown one. Heck for some reason I haven't thrown one in at least 20 years.

On the same note, whatever happened to "PICO" lures ? I.E. Pico pop, pico perch etc..

They are still around, just on a much smaller scale. They are made in Kerrville, Tx about an hour NW of San Antonio. I still have a few Pico Perch and Pico Pop baits.

Re: Using different lures
I would not like to think about this post Rebbasser,I already think there is a monster living under my bed, talking to me in my sleep, telling me that I gotta buy more fishing tackle. I always seem to need the latest and the greatest, when the old stuff never quit working. Can the Bait monkey send subliminal messages while you sleep ? 02 not all of us are as childish to have a Snoopy rod though, monsters under the bed is not childish ? ;D Â*;D Â*;D P N J

Re: Using different lures
For many years, I heavily fished Mepps spinners and Mr. Twister curly tails on jigheads. Now I hardly ever use either and there's no good reason why.

Re: Using different lures
15 yrs. ago I use to catch a ton of bass on floating rapala's and jelly worms...6" and 8". rarely came up blank on the jelly worms...I still use them at least several times a year...but rarely even get bit on them. don't know what it is...but seems certain baits don't produce as well. some years a spinner bait can't be beat...other years...they won't catch do do. even under seemingly exact same conditions. everything is cyclical...so don't get rid of your old baits that you've caught fish on, cause they will work again.

Re: Using different lures
Its called Marketing. The sad thing is most of the lures are geared more towards catching fisherman not fish.
I still have a good supply of Dances Eels and Dances Craws. They taught me to stay away from the Helicopter lure. If yuou stop to think only about 20% of the lures in your takle box have every caught a fish for you. I started being a little more discreminating a couplew of years ago about lures and lure colors. Now I carry less tackle in my boat and buy much more selectively.I finally realized that there were just a few colors and styles that really produced for me.Fish2win |

Re: Using different lures
i seen stats on tackle some where.. something like the average bass fisherman owns 300 crankbaits but yet only uses 7% of them.-does this sound right or what?-the average bass fisherman owns 200 plastic baits yet only uses 2% of them. of course this is only the AVERAGE guy most of us tend to own more.

Re: Using different lures
That's why I'm a very careful shopper at the store. I try not to buy a lure that I don't think I'll be using often.
Why should I buy new lures if my older ones are doing fine? |
