Both are very good lures to learn, but I will tell you if you fish both of them correctly you are going to get frustrated alot, but the reward of catching fish are worth it.Rattle traps are a bigger pain in the butt because if your not constantly snagging grass on the retreive ,your not likely to catch alot of fish.First thing you do is take those factory hooks off and replace them with a good hook brand.I hope this helps. Ive caught a lot more fish on a ratltrap than on a jig. The best three productive traps are chrome w/ black back, chrome w/ blue black, and gold w/ orange belly. They make about 20 others and I have most of them. I replace the hooks and snip the leading barb off the front treble. This way I get less snags. This actually is my most thrown lure. Hope this will help. If you look on the articles section there are 2-3 articles on these. Not really good with a PNJ so Ill leave that to the others. 8)

Ditto ;D,

with the exception, that I think the rattletrap will catch fish in open water/suspending also, depending on the mood of the fish.

a jig and a rattle trap are like daylight and dark. They are two totally different baits, and are fished in two totally different ways. You can't even compare the two.

Exactly, nothing similar between these two. If I had to recommend one to you, learn how to fish the jig.

Mtbassman, You are not exactly correct in saying they are like daylight and dark. They can be fished the same way very effectively by letting the lure fall to the bottom and ripped up to fall down to the bottom again. Both lures can be fished where there is grass so I would not say day and night , I would say they are 2 different tools to catch bass. Rattle traps are great baits but they get scratched up in a day of use.
Try using a LuckyCraft LV series or a Yo-Zori Drum.
There paint appears to be part of the bait.
I've personally used gold as my main color, but thats just MY preference.

Jigs- I'm no help what-so-ever. Rat-l-traps- chrome/blue, red, and firetiger are my best colors. The only time I throw red is in the spring- the rest of the year is split between the other two, depending on water color(chr/blu for clear and firetiger for murky). I'm with the guys about changing hooks- for such a great bait, the hooks are terrible. Some other things that help me, change the hook in the front to one size bigger and red. Also on the chrome/blu-switch the back hook to a feather treble, gives the bait a distinct profile. ;D

A rattle trap doesn't get good until you beat about half the finish off it.

Throw them out !!! Hell no, Thats when they get the best feel, the best action and the most class. I'll throw new ones at the rocks a few times just to help the process along. 8)

The absolute best place you can use a trap is over submerged grass. Tick it, and hang on. I like Cream sides with a blue back(Chips Blueplate Color), Hot mustard color, or gold.

Jigs i prefer around trees and brush. Junebug or Craw.

Different tools for different jobs. I use a ig when I want to slow down and fish cover and a trap for active fish and as Charles said, over grass.

Colors?

Jig-black/blue, watermelon, and green pumpkin.

Traps-chrome/blue, chrome/black, smokey joe, and in the spring, red.
