Going to Ochechobee

Im going to Lake Ochechobee down here in Central Florida, wondering if any of you have been and what seems to work the best?

Only way you'll catch many fish on okeechobee is to find clear water, which will be extremely hard. The hurricanes stirred up a bunch of muck in the lake that had been deposited there for ages. Because the water is so high and its muddy, its killing off all of the plant life in the lake. the bass are going to starve to death pretty soon and the brim, crappie and shad populations are already plummeting. It will take a few yearst for the muck to settle(if there are no more hurricanes) and then it will take a while for the fish to recover from that. This past hurricane seasone has marked the beginning of the end for the fishery. :'(

sad but true, florida lakes aren't having much luck lately, Orange Lake is now ruined, Lake O will be ruined soon unless they can find a solution (which I doubt), and the fate of Rodman will be tied up in the courts/legislation for awhile. With all the growth in this state, I imagine it won't be long before many of our favorite lakes become overfished and I'm sure there are many more problems that I'm not forseeing right now.

this is all sadly true :'( and by the way the weather has been acting...and the way they are predicting this hurricane season...i dont think it will be recovering anytime soon. okeechobee isnt in central florida....its in south florida.....almost near the everglades.

Went down there the end of April. The lake is really messed up. Everyone is fishing in about a 25 acre area called the Monkey Box. It's on the South end of the lake where we fished. Obviously most folks are using shiners, but anything plastic, on a small 1/16oz mojo rig worked also. Just drag it through the weeds. Darker colors worked pretty well especially June Bug. If I can make a suggestion, go to another lake, or river. It's just not worth the exspense for lake "O" right now. If you don't know wehre the monkey box is, well then all I can say is hire a guide or ask everyone you can. Because if you don't find it, then you'll be in for a long day.

the lake is pretty mucked up but when i went last year around this time i was using just PLASTICS lizzards, worms, but what really worked was those creature baits like the "wild thang" or" brush hog" texas rig it and use a 1 oz. or 1 1/2 bullet weight and find thick cover like hidrilla and matted grass!! fish every inch of the cover ITS WORTH IT!!! there are some huge bass in that lake!

1 oz bullet weight ??? holy crap thats huge.....if you went last year around this time you may have been in a hurricane now the lake now sucks....but since your only an hour away from it...then i gtuess you can try your luck....just stick to the monkey box...or any other clearer water you can find!

Spent a couple days on Lake Ochechobee to find that the water is real low! Fished just outside Clewiston in the rim route and picked up a few using shinners.
I spent two nights at what was once a great little marina but now it is in bad shape. I even sent Mr. Martin and email telling him he should try to get his name off of it! User beware!

Back in Michigan waitng for the ice to melt!

I live in central florida, and have never been to lake o. I have wondered for sometime about going there. Mostly I fish locally, and 90% of the time in the lake right here at the house. Its a sad thing to here that the big lake is having it rough.
