Well this can be a little difficult to teach over the net, but off the top here are a few tips...tighten up the cast control knob, use a heavier lure that loads up the rod well and make sure you filled the spool to within 1/8 of an inch of the edge of the spool.

Welcome to the forum!

Use your thumb lightly pressed down on the spool to prevent backlashes. That's all I could tell you, because I just use spinning reels.

First of all fill your spool up to 1/8in of the edge. Tighten up the free spoole knob and try a few casts. To adjust the free spool to the lure weight, stick your rod with the lure on it straight out. Press the button and take note of how fast the lure falls. If it don't fall, loosen it. If it falls really quickly, tighten it. Keep going back and forth until you get a slow and steady fall.

Hula, for a beginer I think it would actually be better if he had the spool knob just tight enough so the lure doesnt fall when the thumbar is pressed and the rod is kept still.

And Burnzy, don't worry about the quality of the reel yet...the mechanics are the same and even a 15 dollar special will catch plenty of fish.

I just went through this with my wife and found a couple of things that helped her. First, watch your lure when you cast. It helped her get the feel of when the lure was slowing down and she needed to start applying more pressure on the reel with her thumb. Second, after the cast, roll the reel so that the handle points up (if you are using a right hand retrieve reel and are right handed). A lady that we tournament fish against gave her that tip and it seems to help her a lot.

learned how to use them by flipping first then. went to side are cast and worked my way up. Everybody backlashes a baitcaster. trick is geting good a pulling them apart fast.

Take soom black tape and cast out out your line useing 3/8-1/2 weight them apply that black tape to your spool over the unused line then real up this will keep your backlashes in being so bad. as you get better remove the tape or give yourself some more line and re tape her.

You've got a point there. I don't even use the free spool any more, mag breaks give me all the control I need.

sniper i have to agree the roll cast is better it is less fatiguing then an over hand cast.

ky is also correct practice practice practice...man it took me a year to get decent with a casting rod..
