An add on to the first question, is how much did these deep water bass weight. I am wondering if small bass will wander this far deep. :

Most often time you will see as you go further out in deep water the fish start to get bigger. Small fish as they call fry (baby fish) tend to stay shallow to stay in cover as not to get ate by bigger fish. as you gow further out you'll get bigger fish waiting for these guy's to come out!

BUT: That's not to say the big fish won't come into shallow water to search out these fry fish cause when Mr Big bass is hungry he'll go out of his way to get a meal.

Even on warm days in cooler months you get a big bass sunning himself in shallow water, but in hot months youll get Mr. bucket head in deeper water. You really got to watch your surrondings I tell a lot of people this and they look at me weird.

All you do is take 5 min look at the lake, the cover, the clarity of the water, the temp of the water, the sky, how the wind is blowing. You know some times I can tell by the leafs on some trees up here if its going to be a good day for fishing. All these tell tale signs will help you be a better fisherman! Hope some of this might help.

Rob has a good point.

If you want the fish that aren't interested, go deep.

If you want a hungry fish, aim shallow.


My personal preference is finding the hungry fish, and it's probably obvious why.

A lot of fisherman go for the "bang the bank theory" but that doesn't always work. Sometimes you have to look outside the box and try for those which often times have been deemed "uncatchable" such as the suspending fish. Which are usually the bigger fish. Working a suspending crankbait, or jerkbait at the depth of those fish can be very rewarding. Even swimming a jig through them is not out of the realm of possibility.
