Take a look here, Matt:

The kind of reel depends on where/how you will be fishing and there is no best bait as such-it depends on a lot of different things as to what works best.

hey man if you are gonna buy a rod, then since you are starting out buy a medium heavy action, that will handle anything from soft plastics to spinnerbaits ect. the reel would depend on your experience if you have the know how or someone to teach you then i would recomend a baitcaster, if not then just something that will handle 10 or 12 # test line. for the best bait i would suggest a texas rigged plastic worm. i think that the guys here will agree with me that you will get more bites on these than say maybe a jig and pig which is a bait used more for quality of fish than quantity. another good bait is a spinnerbait (i like 3/8 oz.) nickle willow leaf blades for clear water, gold colorado blades for murky water. just remember when it comes to spinnerbait blades... nickle when sunny and gold when cloudy, willow leaf in clear water and colorado in murky water. hope this helps.
