Whats a good jig

Ive been fising topwater and soft baits for a while now and want to try some jigs. what company makes a good jig? also is the chatterbait any good?

A Stanley jig is easy to find at kmart or walmart, and have been around for years.
Try either a black and blue combo or green. 3/8, 5/16 or 1/4 is over all range for ounce weight, you can go much heavier tho if you have thick cover.
Match it up with either some plastic craw or pork trailer.

ill agree with JB on the Stanley Jigs, but my personal favorite would have to be a Strike King Bitsy Flip,a 3/8 jig, but it has a really small profile... i rig it with a 3" berkley power craw trailer on 14 lb. test... a great bait, and most of my other jigs are strike king and stanley

i think booyah makes a really good jig. the bitsy boo for smaller profile and their swim jig are really good. i have a chatterbait but never caught anything off it yet. i like the zoom chunk trailers on them too. i think they work great. a watermelon and red jig and trailer has been my go to bait for a while.

I fish either a Stanley Flat Eye jig or a Booyah Baby Boo jig. My brother likes the Eakins Jig (Jewel Bait co.) and I'm going to try them out Tuesday. He does pretty good with them too.

What company makes a good jig? There are too many to list. What you should be asking is what type of jig head works better in what type of cover? Round/ball head, flat (skipping) head, diamond head, football head, etc... and then you have to ask about eye placement. Next is what are the advantages to the types of hooks that are used. Round bend or EWG, heavy or light. Finally what type skirts are preferred and why? Did I mention different weights too?
But back to your question. I prefer Dave's Tournament Tackle, Gerkin Jigs, KidLizard Gecko's, and Woo Daves has/had one too. I haven't tried Peep's yet so I can't comment on his. I always recommend you find a local custom jig maker so that you can experiment with some of the things I've posted above.

i have had the most luck with a black n blue jig or a purple and brown jig. i usually put some sort of grub trailer on it to give it more of a swim affect when bouncing it along

you need to first find out what type of lake bottom you are going to fish.. as most jigs have differant head shape for a reason..
are you in weeds or grass? a pointed head such as a stanley or a poeple's choice will work better.
if you are fishing around wood a rounder head works better..

i fish lakes with a lot of rock/rubble bottom i use a football head jig.

as for color well imo their is only two watermelon seed and green pumkin. i do rarely throw a black/blue jig.. but the other two catch most of my jig fish..
as for trailer water clarity and temp dictate what i use.. in muddy water i use a super chunk or a baby paca-vibrates-. in cold water a jumbo chunk-slows the fall-but most of the time i use a ultra vibe chunk..

alot of poeple swear you wont catch a bass in more than 8 feet of water.. however i use an ozark technique of fishing them in deep water. most of my jig bass come from 10+ feet of water...and i am still learning the jig..

Ooops, I forgot trailers but since Zooker brought it up let's take a shot at them too.
Long or short trailers, wide or narrow, big or small claws, and how much bulk do you want? Some think chosing a trailer has to do with fall rate. Others think about matching the size and color of the crayfish or sunfish in the lake. Zooker has vibration on his mind fishing muddy or stained water.
Companies that I use? I like the Zoom's Super Chunk Jr and KidLizard's Mini Craw Swirl and Huffer trailers.

I got them yesterday and went out this morning to try them. I used a 1/4 oz. blue/black one, the head has a great shape and the skirt has a big profile but not too thick. Second cast of the day into 10' I had a solid 3 lber. Then 35 minutes later another 2.5 lber. After that the bite shut down, I couldn't catch them with anything and there was a big tx on the same small lake so it was under heavy pressure.

Jigfisherman, those jigs look pretty good. I have tried to find some of the hair type jigs to try on spotted bass locally and haven't had much luck.

I use several different jigs and the Dave's tournament tackle jigs are one of my favs.

Mann's Stone Jig are the only jigs I throw during tournaments... mainly because I bought about 50 of them when they were on discount at the local Gander Mountain. A buck a jig? You can't beat that without pouring your own. Still though, I've had nothing but success with them everywhere I've went.

Big fan of the Hot Craw color with an Alabama Baby PacaCraw on it.

Thanks, the hair jigs are made of deer hair. I have made some out of marabou feathers that look real good.
