Making own rubber worms/tubes/need help

I found a website to make my own molds for soft plastics. Gonna try to make worms and tubes/ creature baits and grubs. Anyone know where I can get some plastics that I can melt. Any brand name store around that sells plastics that can be used to make your own worms? Any help into making my own plastics, I would appreciate. Any websites or just from your guys knowledge. Thanks again!!!

Try Barlow's Tackle Shop, www.barlowstackle.com , They have the best selection of molds as well as plastic and coloring additives s well as RTV rubber compounds. The problem with rubber compounds is that it takes 12 to 24 hours to cure, which makes it S L O W to work with.

Thanks, I was just at that website checking some things out. I am gonna try to make my own molds though. Want to copy some of the popular soft baits. Like some of the creature baits and other things that I can replicate.

Rotsa Ruck! I tried pouring my own worms in the 70's and gave it up as a bad idea. I could buy them cheaper than I could make them, and it was not near as much of a P.I.T.A. (Pain In The A__)

jannsnetcraft.com would have plastic to melt. im pretty sure of it... they have glitter too. and i read an article on pouring worms. it says its only worth it in the long run if you make TONS. it said like 1000 and you start saving (exaggeration).

My buddy does speak highly of Jann's. We have one about 30 min away in Toledo. Might check it out.

Hello Web......

Be sure to check out www.tackleunderground.com thoroughly. It's an amazing site. Some of the fellows there use a supplier they call Del......I think that may refer to a Delaware outfit for supplying plastics. Senko Sam, who occasionally frequents this site is an expert who pours a lot of his own, including making his own molds. You might try contacting him the next time you see him posting, or do a search to find him should you have questions.

Although you may be able to buy some lures cheaper, you will be able to do much more to your liking if you get into pouring. Being able to alter designs would be a big plus for one, also changing the softness of the plastics either way could be a big plus also. Making a two part mold isn't expensive if you use materials like plaster of Paris and the like.

One piece of advice though, stay away from the fumes when melting plastics.....no joke. When I weld plastic parts together, I use a pencil soldering iron near an exhaust fan to draft the fumes outside through the garage window. It seems that breathing the fumes is accumulative and can contribute to mental confusion, somewhat like breathing certain automotive solvents in the shop.

Pouring plastics may not be as fumey, but do be on the alert.

Yes, I was going to make doublesided molds with plaster. I have a certain design I wanted to do and if it happens to work. could be the next big thing. Trust me guys. Thanks for the help and sam's website was a nice one also. I am about to begin with the molds later today. Talk to ya soon!

Plaster molds do well for most lures, but those with fine details are injection mold lures and injection molds cost over a few grand each.

But note, if you want to copy a Senko's form and only want to start with a one part mold, believe me, the stick will work!!!

If you want to try some cheaper one part molds, www.lurecraft.com has over 200! They also sell plastic (not good), colorant (not bad), glitter (fair, but square shaped). They supposedly have a full-round Senko mold.

The absolute best molds are from Delmart and Bob's tackleshop. These guys lazer cut aluminum and produce perfect baits every time. A little pricey, but they last forever.

Don't put it off - a great hobby that will :
1. save money in the long run (no shipping, gas mileage or tax)
2. allow you total control over:
a. softness
b. color
c. salt content
3. allow copying discontinued baits you might run out of
4. allow copying baits and only pay 1/5 the cost per bait
5. allow copying of your own prototypes
6. helps you learn about colors and shapes that all species like to hit - not just store bought plastics.

ok, you know what i might try this and never buy soft plastics again. but ive got an idea. anyone think this will work? instead of salt, buy small smelt fish from a fish market and finely ground it and use it in a bait. also, where do i get the plastic, what kind of plastic would it be (didnt understand fromt he article) and how much is it?

Senko Sam, that is the exact page that I had found on Saturday to make my molds up. Very detailed and great directions on that web-site also. A++++ I can't wait to get started in making what I believe will be a break-through bait. Wanted to make it this weekend, but had to get ready for daughter's B-Day party. I am so ready for fishing with my new soft plastics that I will have, it is killing me. Can we get this darn cold-winter over with here in Ohio already???? HAHA Have a good one fellas.
