Default gear ratio

This is an awesome message board. I have learned so much from you guys. As a female angler who absolutely loves to fish, sometimes people do not tell you what you need to know. Please explain what gear ratio is and how it works. Thanks

welcome to the board.don't step in the BS.gear ratio is the number of turns the spool makes in relation to the number of turns of the handle.for example a 5:1 ratio would be one turn of the handle, the spool would turn 5 times.the higher the ratio the faster you can retrieve your line.in some situations a low gear ratio comes in handy, other times a faster retrieve in necessary.
hope this helped a little :-/

Welcome to the forum!

To add a little to what Tom said, the lower the gear ratios are good for baits like crankbaits where winching power is more important than speed, where the higher gear ratios are good for fast moving lures like a buzzbait.

Don't let these guys fool you-the fur does fly on occasion, but they are a great bunch of folks. They even know how to fish a little bit ;D.

Some of that may be true, but the northeners w/ cabin fever seem to blow harder Nov-Feb.

Flowerfireman, What the h@ll was that suposed to mean?Your mission is to put the fires out not fan the flames. ;D Oh never mind I ain't got no cabin , just a slight fever. Is it really true about the statistics saying a large percentage of fires started were by firemen ? :P P N J
