Hiya, Denny in Ohio, I only know one good thing about depth finders. That is what you see on your screen is past tense.

not to sound really assinine but try turning the unit on. that is how struture is found by running a round with one eye glue to the screen.

As for scaring the fish, I've always found it better IMO to keep the trolling moter turned on so you have a steady rythym, vs bumping the trolling moter on and off. Your manual should help describe some detailing on the screen. As for fishing them after you located them, you can always throw out some bouy marker around the spot you want to fish. Once you spot something on the finder slow down, and make severals passes from different angles to get a clear picture of whats down there. Or you could just by the Aqua View system, if you have pretty clear water, it's a underwater camera.

With a flasher it's right under you.
Locating structure that the fish may use is more important than actually seeing fish. I.E. channel bends, brush piles, drop offs, rocks, etc... |
