Hey guys I can't remember who originally posted this link a while back. I got a chance to use this over the weekend on a deeply hooked fish and it worked. It took longer than I would have liked and my brother had to pull the hook out with a needle nose while I held it steady but I'm pretty sure we saved the fish, a nice 2 pounder, so it made the effort worth while. I thought I would post the link again for all of those newcomers who didn't see it the first time. Thanks to whoever posted it the first time.

pretty sure it was reb.....i have used it a number of times, with great success.....i havnt had to cut the line because the bass deeply hooked since i read that. works like a charm, you just have to be careful not to scuff up their gills to much when stickin your fingers or pliers in there

thatll really help when i go catfishing or catch a catfish they always suck the hook way down there usually so far u cant see it!

I just read the article to and realizes I had been practicing that method for years, not that i am smart, I am cheap..never used to carry hemostats or pliers to the pond when first learning, and often had so little tackle , that once I was shown how to go up in the gills and get the hook, It became second nature.
If ya only go to the pond with one pole and one hook, ya get ideas like that or your sunk for the rest of the day with no hook.
I'd recommend going to any pond with only one bait and forcing yourself to make it work (meaning catch a fish on it)....its the best way to get confidence to reuse the bait when the conditions exist..... 8)

I had wondered about this a few times.

So turning the hook when its firmly in your finger tips wont tear the fish up?

It might tear them up a little bit but not near as much as trying to pull the hook straight out.

Oh yeah, I used that trick as well and the hook does pull out. Whether or not the damage already inflicted by the barb results in the fish being mortally wounded I don't know, but I guess it gives them the best chance.

fish are used to have that area cut up, poked, sliced, pried, etc etc. they eat bluegill, and we all know those lil' buggers have some poky spines ;D as long as you get the hook out, they will be fine...unless you tear out a huge chunk of the throat material with it :-X
