Best way of hooking bluegill for bait
I've recently been able to fish a great little lake that is very easy to catch small 3-5 inch blue gill (loaded with them), that I'll then use as bait to catch some nice 3-6 lb bass. My only problem is finding the best way to hook the blue gill as bait. I have no trouble getting numerous strikes and hook ups. I've tried many different techniques and hook sizes, but still have a lot of the bass throw the hook and blue gill, while I'm reeling them in. Any tricks or tips on the best way to present the blue gill on a hook.

You can hook them a number of ways, threw the back fin area , or the eyes or mouth, however in all fairness to the bass, if the bass does get it all in her mouth and swims away and then you set the hook, that hook may be so deep in the gullet (throat) of the bass you'll injure it getting it out,
Ya have to remember that on artificial lures the angler feels the strike and sets the hook immediately, however to give the bass enough time to inhale a bluegill, it takes a few seconds longer. While getting a nice bass is everyones objective here, we are all hoping that you would choose to fish with a "catch and release" attitude and stick with artifical If ya want fish with bluegills, please target big cats :'( |

well i have had a bass follow a bluegill i caught onces and he swolled it hole rite before i took it out of the water, but i didnt hook him. the best way to hook them is in the back with a big old hook and giant bobber. it works for the ten+ fish trust me.

Re: Best way of hooking bluegill for bait
I have seen it done many different ways, but the best way I have found is to cut off their top fin and tail. Then hook them in the back. They are injured and when they try to move, they are more attractive to bass.

Check your local regulations to make sure it is legal.
