Re: how to know what to use
I usually am so pumped up to hit the water that my first lure of choice is a moving bait , such as a crankbait, or a spinnerbait, then if after an hour or so no hits I'll settle down to flipping a worm , or pig n jig or something plastic 8)

A lot of it depends on knowlege and experience-experience will come as you fish more. Knowlege you can get by reading these boards and other sites. It sounds like you are just starting to bass fiah, so here is a great resource for someone getting started:

Re: how to know what to use
If I havn't been in awhile and dont know what the fish are doing, I do the same thing as JB. Start with a horizontal presentation (spinnerbait, crankbait) Thren switch to a vertical-bottom presentation(tube, worm) One usually works alot better than the other so now you've cut the guesswork in half. After that then you fine tune with color, size, speed maybe a different lure. Then by the time you figure it out it's dark and you have to go home

Re: how to know what to use
It will be learned in time as you spend alot of hours on the water. Each lake is a little different , learn your lakes as to where they are and what lures work when and you are able to repeat it year after year for the most part. Sorry this is not gong to help much except you might write things down for a future reference on conditions and time of year and which lure produced the most fish. P N J
