Losing Fish

I have been having a big time problem losing fish. I have been fishing for quite a few years now, and have never had this problem. Smaller fish its not so bad, but when I hook into a lunker I have been losing them when they jump out of the water. I have been setting hook right and all, but I just dont get it. Depending on the size of the worm I use either a 3/0, 4/0, or 5/0 texposure hook. Any ideas what the problem is. Help is greatly appreciated.

DONT LET THEM JUMP!!! 8) when you feel the fish began to come up lower your rod tip into the water. keep that fish in the water till shes at the boat

Sometimes you can't stop the Bass from Jumping if they are big enough ;D But maybe you are not using fresh line so you have a lot of stretch in your line when you set the hook which is not getting those hooks through those big boys lips

Switch hooks and see if it helps. Go with Mustad Ultra points. If they throw those then it's definately something you're doing wrong.

if it is on a soft plastic or jig be sure to leave just a little slack in the line when you set the hook. imagine trying to pull a rope out of someones hands, if it is tight and you pull it won't have the snap to it like if you gave a little slack first. make sense? i had this problem earlier in the year for the first time in my life, then i noticed what i was doing wrong and that fixed it for me.

Try some scent maybe you will get a better hookset or use some fresh hooks

kj, if you use mono, dont leave slack in the line....mono has enough stretch that if you leave slack in the line it wont get a good hookset

I have on Berkley trilene 8lb test. Try different maybe? Good tips though. Stuff is crazy, been fishing for a good 10yrs and just now having this prob. ???

i would go with atleast 10lb if fishing mono....and i would have a reel spooled up with 20lb powerpro 8)

yeah i have always heard the samething bassfisher but when i was missing fish i seen i wasn't leaving slack and then i gave it a try so far it has worked, i know to do it with braid but i use maxima and it still seems to work.

nj, whenever I see this topic one question immediately comes to mind: Did you check to see if your hooks were sharp? with all the baits, techniques, rods, reels, etc. the sharpness of your hook often gets overlooked. If it will not dig into your fingernail with just a little pressure it needs to be sharpened. I've learned to check them regardless of what it says on the package. Often the simplest solution solves the problem ;D

With light line like that you must be craazy trying to hook bass with standard hooks. Try a light wire hook or up size your line if water clarity permits

i missed bass like that when i texas rigged now that i wacky worm i rarely miss any fish.

Simple solution.
1. GET A SUPERLINE! or at least no stretch flourocarbon.
2. Buy some Owner Offset Wide Gap Hooks, or some Gammy Superline hooks. If you rod is a MH then next time you get a bite cross it's eyes. If it's a small one it should come flying at you ;D The texposer hooks I use for only 1 bait and that's the Fin-S fluke I use. But the hooks themselves get dull quickly and bend very very easily :P. Sometimes it's impossible to keep a fish from jumping, but if it's coming up out of he water, I try to time it. to give her a big pull just as she's coming out of the water, less shaking, and more pressure towards you, and reel fast to get the slack line up. Use your rod to help keep pressure on while catching up.

are you setting the hook to early?..try setting like a few seconds after the bass has grabbed it..if it is set to early it will not get in a tough part of the bass's mouth..i like to hook the bass about an inch-3 inches behind the very tip of the mouth..right before the gill's is the best spot for me atleast..can be a pain to get out but hook's the fish..i don't like it setting to late because i try to avoid the bait going down in the gut..even though sometimes you can't avoid that from happening

NJ, I thought I posted earlier on this ? I believe its a combination of line, hook, lure profile. If your using light line, you must consider using a light wire hook and smaller profile baits to ensure your plastic baits isn't to large for a proper hookset with all of the stretch from the light line.I believe on light line ,you can outcast your hookset ability because of the line stretch and if the fish holds that bait hard you do not generate enough force in the hookset to compensate for everything without jepordizing line breakage.
