Finding a small leak
This past fall i got a used 14ft flat bottom sea nymph for fishing and duck hunting the susquehanna river. the only problem is there is a small leak somewhere and i can't seem to find it. their is a plywood floor in the in the boat so i can't see where the water is comming from. does anybody have any ideas on finding the leak. i hate having water in my boats.
thanks guys |

Re: Finding a small leak
I guess you could flip it over and start looking. May be a liitle split or check the seamlines. My boat was actually sprayed with a undercoating- guess it seals up all the rivets and seams. Sorry cant give you an easy fix. 8)

Re: Finding a small leak
Put the plug in and run some water into the boat. See where it leaks out.

Re: Finding a small leak
or you could just put a bit of fiberglass resin all over the bottom of the boat and not worry about it! B-)

Re: Finding a small leak
check seams and or rivet rows if it is leaking it will be around one of the rivets. as it is aluminum jb weld the leak. glass is a royal nut buster to get to stick real well to metal.

Re: Finding a small leak
I'd say it's probably a rivet too Zook, but something else it could be is a bad drain plug.

Re: Finding a small leak
I would think its leaking at a rivit like you said zooker. Â*it isn't bad. Â*it might leak about a half pint an hour if that. Â*i just hate having water in my boat. Â*i bet the hole is the size of a pin. Â*in the worst case i will put a nice thick coat of olive green paint on the bottom. Â*i woun't be doing that till duck season is over on the 14th. Â*gotta keep after those ducks ;D I have a brand new plug and i actually tried one on the outside too. I'm pretty sure its comming from the opposite side as the plug.

Re: Finding a small leak
They make aluminum epoxy stuff now. I don't remember the exact name of it, but I used it to repair a crack on the front of my 16' Aluminum Fisher Marine boat and it worked great. Just have to sand it down smooth after the stuff hardens.

Re: Finding a small leak
Hey guys i found my leak. i put the hose in the boat and filled it up half way. There was 2 rivets right beside each other at the back of the boat that were leaking slowly. i pounded them tighter and added some sealer around then. Hopefully this solves the problem. i will know in an hour when i'm out duck hunting. wish me luck ;D
thanks for the help |

Re: Finding a small leak
If that epoxy stuff doesn't work, it is possible to have rivets welded. I had a couple bad rivets up on the bow of my boat that leaked for years, never could get epoxy to stay on cause the V on the trailer always rubbed on these rivets - so I just had them welded and the boat has been bone dry ever since.

Re: Finding a small leak
actually the trailer bunk is what lossened those 2 rivets. Â*I got some jb weld in the putty form and it is totally dry now. Â* It was dry after i hammered the rivet but i just wanted to make sure. Â*Problem solved
now the next problem. My old bow mount (mercury thruster plus) is only working on high speed.. on any speed setting it goes fast. so i may just get a used minn kota powerdrive. help me out on the other post about the power drive if you can. thanks |

Re: Finding a small leak
You got a bad speed rehostat. If you can't get it from a Mercury dealer, try an electrical supply house.
