chrome/blue back Rat-L-Trap

i saw this suggested in another post, what is a good size/ oz. to go with 1/2 or 3/4 oz.?

I go with the 3/4 or 1 ounce in early spring , but I use the white and blue with some red and orange on the bottom at Ky. Lake
However the rest of the year I use the 1/2 ounce Rayburn Red
Cordel spot, which is a trap clone
And also I use the crome n blue or black 1/2 ounce
I guess I should have a firetiger for cloudy days, most crankbaits in the firetiger color seem to do better on gloomy skies up here in oHIo :P

Don't rule out the smaller 1/4 oz; that size can be very productive at times.

Anyone out there have much luck with rapalas version of the trap? I use the smaller one cuz the paint job is awesome, but I think the original rat L trap does better.

Actually yes I have. I prefer them over the Rat-L-Trap. They are the Rattlin Rapala's. I also like Cotten Cordel. I prefer gold myself, but have used about every color over the last few years. Got one of Carolina Chip's tied on right now though for this weekend, goona give it a workout. It a redish brown color though.

That is probably the most popular color of trap. Â*It definitely catches fish. Â*I throw 1/2 oz. 99% of the time. Â*I'm throwing it on a baitcaster, and you can chunk them a mile. Â*About the only time I use a 1/4 oz. is on my "wind rig"-a MH action spinning rod I can throw into a strong wind. Â*As JB said, 3/4 ounce is good in early spring, but for those I use a crawfish color, and don't use them much after the spawn is over.

One thing about traps-they have notoriously dull hooks right out of the box. Â*Some folks change them out, but I just sharpen them before I use them and so far that has done the trick.

Which reminds me-one of the most important pieces of equipment you can have is a hook sharpener. Â*If a hook will not dig into your fingernail with just a little pressure it needs to be sharpened. Â*I use one of these:



The sharpener fits into the cap and it fits in your pocket like a pen. Â*You can get one at WalMart for about $5-well worth the investment.

JB and Lizards, I use the Rapalas and Cordell Spots, too. In muddy water a shad colored Cordell Spot is a good bait to throw. It has a different rattle system than a trap and I think it puts out more noise than a trap.

Yeah the chrome blue back rattle trap is an all time favorite. I use it on sunny days and gold black back on cloudy days. I usually throw a half ounce unless I'm looking to catch bigger fish. A 3/4 oz. catches bigger fish but eliminates some of the smaller fish. As Rebasser said they come with dull hooks. I swap them out with Gamakatsus, a red hook on the front. I have had way too much luck using red hooks not to beleive in them. I put them on the front so they will go for the front and get hooked better. Another theory being a red hook on the front resembles gills. A fish with its gills showing is feeding. This triggers a feeding response in a bass.

Chrome w/blue back is the standard that many good fishermen tell they use.I also like red/orange crawdad imitators.

I think that color is THE best! I throw a 1/2 oz alot but in the fall, I like to throw a 3/4oz simply because I don't think the fish are seeing as many in that size and that forage is larger in the fall. A 1/4 oz is a good change up for early summer and real clear water. Definitely change the hooks and try a feather treble on the back Really enhances the profile of the bait!

would you belive i hate a chrome and blue or black lipless bait. i use cordell suspending spots 3/8 oz and 1/4oz strike king diamond shad. i like to use fire tiger or shad color.

I use the Rapalas a lot. They come with much better hooks than regular Traps. I see no difference among the Traps, Spots and Rapalas, but then, I have no way to test them in a way to come up with a valid conclusion.

I often wondered how each would fare over a long period of time. My gut feeling is that the results would be pretty similar.
