Default Poppers, Any tips on how to use and when?

Hey,
I have a popper and have tried using it many times and have only caught one small bass with it. The way i used it was jerk it 3 times then wait a few seconds then jerk it then wait and so on. Do you have any tips on a better way to use it and where would i use it? Also when i was fishing with my friend he got the popper stuck in a tree and chipped it. I'm gonna get a new one and was wondering what to get.

thanks,
Cman

I find randomness works best. (Within reason.)

I got a 6 pounder the 4th of July on a Threadfin Shad Poppin' Image Jr:

I like to throw them around cover early and late-low light conditions. Vary your retrieve-speed up, slow down, etc. and let the fish tell you what they want.

CMAN,

When you cast a popper, do not start your retrieve until all the rings in the water disapate. Let the lure set dead still for up to 30 seconds. Many times, the suspense gets the bettter of the bass and they grab it before you have a chance to pop it. I have had this happen many times.

Lately I have been getting a ton of hits on a strike king popping frog using an extremely slow presentation. Throw it, let it sit, jerk it and then let it sit for5-10 seconds between each time I pop it. Â*I have gotten many fish like this in the morning and in the evening lately.

cman, are you sure you're not stets?

One thing I always harp on is location. I find that too many fisherman contribute their catch to the bait they are fishing with. Sometimes this is true, most times its not. Topwater fishing is great, and my favorite way to catch fish, but it is not effective most times of the day. Sometimes you can catch fish on top all day, but those days are few and far between. In the warm weather months topwater is mostly isolated to early and late in the day. Also, your topwater bait should suit your conditions. If its windy, and the water is choppy, or muddy, then more action is required. If the water is still, and flat, then try just bairly moving it.

You can get them at BPS or Cabela's. I also am partial to the Chug-A-Bugs. Look at you local tackle shop, there are many brands that will give you this look. The reason I like the Bug is tha it has ball bearings in them, and gives you an extra bang for your buck so to speak.

Bassmania, it is made by Excalibur, and I got it at WalMart. There are two sizes, and that one is the smaller version-a threadfin shad Poppin' Image Jr.

The Rebel Pop-R works great for me at either dawn or dusk. Also something to try would be a Smithwick Devil's Horse.

It has 2 propellers front and back and 3 treble hooks. I usually just work it like a Pop-R. I have gotten soo many bites on this lure that alot of the paint has been removed by the bass' teeth. I like firetiger and a shad color.

Well whatever they have, it digs into the lure just like it digs into your thumb when you grab it by the lip. I think Heddon, makes a devils horse too, and im sure many other companies make similar lures. Anyhow, it works pretty good for me. Gotta love those topwater hits.

bass have teeth, they're just not very big or sharp. Thats why you get shredded thumbs whenever you lip a bass. Their teeth aren't for eating, they're mainly for gripping and tasting, although they can definitely break skin if they bite down on your thumb hard enough. It doesn't hurt, but its like getting a concrete abrasion.

I believe the green, black, orange is firetiger and the other is a shad.
