Take your pick-poppers like a Pop R or poppin' image, prop baits like a chrome/black back Heddon Torpedo, Zara Spook just to name a few.

Re: Best Open Water Topwater Lure
White popper usuallly. It resembles an injured shad. Black jitterbug at night. Buzzbait anytime except while fishing clear water. Propbait or stickbait ocasionally.
Listening to the bass can give you a pretty good idea of what you should be throwing. For example if a bass hits your lure very lightly, not agressively switch to a quieter lure such as a stickbait. On the other hand an explosive strike indicates they're agressive and that you can switch to a faster noisier lure such as a buzzbait. |

Re: Best Open Water Topwater Lure
i second the spook idea. color doesn't seem to matter a whole lot around here. but i prefer something that has some red on the belly or throat area. i have had some really violent strikes from some good fish in water that had no visable cover. for me it is heart stopping fun.

Re: Best Open Water Topwater Lure
For open water (ie. well away from shoreline and over 5' of better):
2.5" popper - any brand. Trailer hook should have feather, flash or hair attached. Don't care for split rings on poppers and attach with a tight clinch knot to the lowest part of the line tie. (Same for Sammie and Spook type plugs.) Big difference in imparted action! Like all topwaters for weedy areas and over rock fields near dropoffs. |

Re: Best Open Water Topwater Lure
bassfisher02,
tie on a spook and cast far out, and give a series of one or two crisp strong tugs with your rod tip, You'll notice the spook sway left on first tug, the right on the 2nd tug, if its head continually tries to pop up instead of the side to side action, you are pulling to hard, like any topwater, cast and let it sit, tug a few times and let it sit, repeat, you'll get the hang of it 8) |

Zara Spook, Rapala Skitterwalk, High Roller, or maybe a Devil's Horse. All in dark colors to silhouette against the sky above them.
