good point seaphantom, i expected him to know that ;D ya, make sure you set the hook. dont just expect him to hook him/her self on the hook, as soon as it hits the bait, set the hook.

unless your hooks are really dull, then the fish will get hooked. there is no such thing as the bass being to big for the hook to penetrate. unless your using really small hooks. you must not be settin the hook right.

When he grabs it count to 6 while feeding him line out of the reel when you get to six stick his fish butt as hard as you can, that will get him i promise!!

i wouldnt count to six, that is way way to long. count to.......actually, dont even count. as soon as you feel him on your line, set the hook hard. if you count to six, he will throw the hook, especially if you are fishin during spawn, they suck the bait in just to move it, not to eat it(only during spawn) sometimes while fishing the spawn, i have less then a second to set the hook. you have to set it as soon as you feel it. dont wait.

well, you can take ur chances. what is the point of waiting? as soon as you feel the line get tight, that means that the bass has sucked the lure in and will spit it out if it feels anything sharp.

02, I think he is referring to using live bait, when waiting to set the hook is a good thing.

Make sure you have a sharp hook-if it will not dig into your fingernail with just a little pressure you need to sharpen it. Also, if you are using a real small hook you may need to get a bigger one-it might not be big enough to get a good hookset.

4.0 or 5.0 maybe bigger depending on the size of the baitfish you have. I agree with the fast 4 count. When the line goes tight, do a quick miss. count and stick that pig. Do you use a bobber or do you freeline the live bait? A lot of the live baiters are running shiners 8-12" below a bobber and just hammering fish all day long. 8)

"spit it out if he feels anything sharp" - dont bream have the fins on their back that would stab a basses mouth. Same goes for a crayfish, im sure every bass has been pinched while trying to eat a crayfish. That doesnt stop them from eating it then or doing it again. It's a common thing for people to hide their hooks especially when fishing live bait. Some serious catfish anglers say it has nothing to do with the bite, just getting hung up or not...how many bones, fins, or pinches does a bass or anygamefish get in their lives while eating???
I also say wait a couple of seconds before setting the hook, Not too long or she'll swallow it. If anyone here has fished stone cats/mad toms for smallies, they'll know you wait a couple seconds for the smallie to get the bait situated in its mouth... bedding fish might be different but still I'd vote on waiting. And use big enough equipment...
and also try registering on the site rather than posting as a guest...

i didnt really mean it like that. i guess i should clear it up next time. im just sayin a bass isnt gunna keep an artificial in his mouth for longer then 4 seconds. especially during spawn. i've lost plenty waiting on the bass, they spit it out. as soon as you feel the tug, set the hook. this will usually mean a better hook placement. waiting till 4 seconds is way to long for me(with artificials) you guys can take your chances, but i dont see the point of waiting.

Or you could just use a 5/0 circle hook with the live bait, once the bass takes it, just apply pressure and bring him in.

Yes but you never know.

To answer the original question. Bass will actually turn the live bait once it's in their mouth So waiting a few seconds is good. As for how to hook them, I will usually run a hook under his main fin on it's back. or through both lips on it's mouth. Use at least a 5/0 EWG hook. Now if you need to really ask how to set the hook once you waited, then just yank it as hard as you can without breaking the line. Make sure the drag is set properly.
