light tackle casting suggestions
here's my dilema.
bought a new Pop-R today (lost my good one in a tree stump the other day) so i replaced it today. tied it on tonite, but this one must be a little smaller than the one i had, cause when i go to cast this thing,i get NO DISTANCE whatsoever!! quite aggrevating. im using it on the same rod & reel set-up as the other one and that 1 sailed far. if the distance im getting on this is the best im going to be able to get, i'll just say "piss on it" and go get the size i had before. unless theres something i can try? |

Re: light tackle casting suggestions
you can use a thinner diameter line, a shorter pole, or both.

Re: light tackle casting suggestions
What kind of reel are you using? (baitcaster, spinning, pushbutton)

Re: light tackle casting suggestions
If it is a smaller size you may have to get a bigger one to get the same distance, or throw it on a lighter rod and reel. Â*For example, I have two different sizes of Rapala Shad Raps. Â*The bigger size I can throw on my baitcaster, but the smaller size I have to throw on spinning tackle, otherwise I get no distance.
Well, since you are throwing it on spinning tackle you probably need to get a bigger bait to get the distance. |

Yeah besides switching back to a bigger size, I don't know what to tell you, unless you've lost a lot of line. A spinning reel without enough line won't cast far.

Re: light tackle casting suggestions
i may try the lighter line first, the spinning reel i was using it on has 12 lb test, i have another reel w/ 6 lb test, ill give that 1 a try, otherwise ill just go get the slightly bigger size i had the first time

Re: light tackle casting suggestions
watch using a lighter line though, i have had fish hit my popper and break it off when they go to run with it, i would go with 10lb or something around there

Re: light tackle casting suggestions
Try braids. They have 20lb. test with a 6lb. test diameter.

exactly, if using light line on a topwater or any other bait that is nortorious for a hard hit/dive/run with it type reaction, you really need to have the drag set light, if you'd rather not, you could use power pro, 20lbs test is 6 lbs diameter, yet is much stronger than 20 lbs test, i'd say its more like 40-60. |
