they can have knicks in them and weaken or break your line, they can effect your casting ability. if you have a really cheap peice of crap rod then the guides can pop off while pullin a fish up.

TRAV,
The purpose of the guides on casting rods is to keep the line from rubbing on the rod under load. The more guides, the less chance of the line dragging on the rod. The down side of numerous guides is that it add sweight to the rod and also hampers the action. The purpose of guides on spinning rods is to keep the line from slapping the rod, thereby cutting down your casting distance. Too many guides and it stiffens the action and adds drag to the line. The proper number of guides are needed without having too many. How's that for dancing around the question? JackL |
